EU exec details actions for electric car roll-out

Other initiatives in the green strategy include fuel efficiency standards for trucks and for the air-conditioning units of cars.

What will the standard look like? --Ed.

The European Union's executive said on Wednesday that standards for charging electric cars and vans should be set by next year and fuel efficiency rules for motorcycles be proposed this year.

Launching its strategy for green vehicles, the European Commission said: "The standardised charging interface should ensure interoperability and connectivity between the electricity supply point and the charger of electric vehicle."

Electric safety requirements should be proposed in 2010, while crash safety requirements and potential risks due to the quietness of electric vehicles need to be reviewed by 2012, it said.

Re: EU exec details actions for electric car roll-out

Hi Sean:

___I wonder why they are so concerned with standardization? We are going to an SAE standard plug here and as far as crash test standards, they are on their own to first meet DOT and then get rated by the IIHS and NHTSA.

___And motorcycle emissions (fuel efficiency) standards? While I would love to see improved FE from the bikes, they are on average more fuel efficient than the cars other than the small diesels on the highway. With the small CAT’s attached, I can almost guarantee they meet Euro IV and the BMW’s are sure to meet Euro V.

___And then the sound standards I can see what will be the first mod performed… I’ll take the “Ice-Cream Truck a Comin” sound for mine please

___Good Luck

___Wayne
