I would have thought so too.

But the similarities may be hurting Ford as well if people are thinking that they are too much alike and may be prone to similar failures.

Agreed, Taliesin. Ford has had some similar problems, at least with respect to the braking issue that came up earlier this month, though I'm surprised it didn't get a little more media attention than it did. And if I understand correctly Ford also has the worst overall recall record of any automaker.

That's quite possible, but the Explorer/tire problem I don't really blame on them.

The tire pressure they "suggested" was safe. BUT only if the owner actually kept that as a minimum. When the tires dropped below that they had problems.

When I finally replaced the tires on the Ranger the dealer was really surprised that I had those same tires on it. And they were original with 80K miles.

Now the Pintos on the other hand......

I think Toyota has a long term problem on their hands. It may be worse in the short term, but this is not something will forget about. Like it has been said, Toyota sells cars because of Reliability...not because they look great, or because they're ultra fun to drive. Reliability and repeat customers are all they had going for them. If you put a dent in that, you're going to struggle to get back to where you were.

I actually give Ford most of the blame for the Explorer rollover problem. Yes, defective tires and inadequate inflation pressures were involved, but I also think the 1st gen Explorer had a dangerously high center of gravity for a passenger vehicle, with a load floor high enough to make the problem much worse when loaded.

Depending on how Toyota handles the crisis internally, it may benefit them eventually. Replacing complacency with diligence benefits most organizations.

You could argue that Ford's recall crises were part of what made it less complacent than GM and better able to handle the recent financial crisis.

Wisdom often comes from the experience of dealing with the aftermath of bad decisions.
