More fuel efficient, more amenities and more capable… And unfortunately, very expensive
Just like the US, BMW’s class-leading X5d, will receive an array of exterior design and engine changes offering even greater performance, lower emissions. Within the UK, the new BMW X5d will go on sale beginning June 5.
Three new engines will be launched for the xDrive30d, xDrive40d – replacing the xDrive35d – and the xDrive50i – replacing the xDrive48i. All of the new powerplants now best the EU5 standards.
The entry level xDrive30d has been upgraded to provide increased performance, making this the first conventionally-powered luxury SAV to record a sub 200g/km CO2 reading. The engine consumes just 31.9 mpgUS combined on the NEDC, a 10 percent improvement - yet produces 245HP, up 10hp on the previous xDrive30d. Acceleration to 60 mph now takes just 7.4 seconds – a six percent improvement over the previous model.
The replacement of the twin-turbocharged xDrive35d with the new xDrive40d sees an improvement in emissions of 10 percent, emitting only 198g/km CO2 whilst delivering 31.4 mpgUS combined on the NEDC. The zero to 60 mph time has also improved, now just 6.6 seconds, down from 7.0 seconds. The over the top 306 HP turbo-diesel offers 20 more HP than the outgoing engine.
The BMW X5 will be mated to a standard eight-speed automatic transmission helping to improve fuel economy while allowing smoother shifts and improved driving dynamics.
The new BMW X5d includes a number of exterior changes, enhancing the appearance of BMW’s original 4x4. Revised front bumpers with enlarged vents, to increase the air supply to the engine and brakes, and matt aluminum-look lower scuff plates and vent fins, now feature to underscore its performance credentials.
New xenon headlights, with bright white LED corona rings, modernize the face of the Crossover while the more centralized front fog lights complete the new front end. At the rear is a revised red light cluster, enhancing the lines of the car with horizontal LED light bars. Enlarged tail pipes, within a redesigned rear bumper, finish off the look.
2011 BMW X5d - What it was designed for

Doubtful you will ever see a $70,000 USD + X5d doing this although I have

Enhanced standard equipment
Completing the updates is a raft of additions to the standard equipment list. As well as the new eight-speed automatic transmission, for the first time leather upholstery comes as standard across the entire X5 range. Xenon headlights will light the way for the entire range whilst Servotronic steering now comes as standard.
A wider range of high-tech options are available, including Lane Departure Warning, Active Cruise Control with ‘Stop and Go’ function, speed limit display and side-view cameras.
