Toyota’s Indian Etios Concept sedan.
Toyota of India unveiled its "World First, India First" concept called the "Etios", a compact car newly developed specifically for the Indian market. Toyota is showing the concept car at the 10th Auto Expo show in New Delhi, which runs until January 11.
The Etios target market is Indian families in the rapidly growing automobile market. Reflecting a "one class above" theme, the Etios' styling promotes what Toyota considers “status”. With a reasonably spacious interior and abundant storage space, the Etios offers excellent fuel efficiency. To make the car as affordable as possible, use of locally sourced parts were pursued to keep costs low. On display at the show are a sedan version with a newly developed 1.5L gasoline engine and a hatchback version with a newly developed 1.2L gasoline engine.
“I visited many Indian cities and homes to learn the market and to hear from the consumer directly,” said Etios chief engineer, Yoshinori Noritake. “Over four years, more than 2,000 engineers have been involved in the development of the Etios, and each has devoted his or her best effort with no compromises. I am convinced in my heart that the Etios offers joy of ownership and quality of life to consumers in India.”
“We are very proud that India is the lead country for Toyota's new compact cars,” added Mr. Sandeep Singh, Deputy Managing Director, Marketing, TKM. “We understand that the Toyota brand in India represents quality that is never compromised, advanced technology, durability and reliability, all of which are essential features in our soon to be launched new compact cars. With the introduction of Etios, we hope to attain a sizeable market share in India in the shortest possible time. To ensure maximum accessibility to our customers, we will expand our sales/service network to about 150 dealers by the end of 2010. This is the beginning of our marketing campaign for Etios. Next would be the exhibition of Etios and other models in 10 major cities for Indian customers to see and experience Toyota's legendary quality standards."
TKM will produce the Etios beginning in late 2010 at its second plant, which is now being built expressly for this vehicle. Annual sales are expected to reach upwards of 70,000 units in India with future exports planned.
