I'd recommend the HX, as it is more comfortable than the previous gen VX. I love my HX and the 50MPG I get in the summer and 45MPG in the winter (no hypermiling, either. Just conservative driving at 65-70MPH on the freeway).
Having said that, now I kind of wish I bought a sedan (LX). A bit easier with the family, if it's your primary vehicle. Fortunately, mine is just a commuter, but I'd still like that option.
But I think you're headed in the right direction looking at Civics. You can get an HX all day long for $5k. There are a few right by me going for ~$3k on the average.
