Anybody here with a Taurus or Sable?
I'm new here... and was wondering if there's anyone here with a Taurus or Sable that I could compare data and techniques with?
I have a 1997 Taurus GL sedan.

Re: Anybody here with a Taurus or Sable?
I know we have had some. I'd say check the mileage logs to get an idea of what others are achieving (if you can find them) and for techniques just swap notes with anyone driving a midsize A/T (I assume) car. The most important stuff doesn't change much between cars of similar size and equipment.
Welcome, BTW!

Re: Anybody here with a Taurus or Sable?
Hi Sean:
___I owned an 88 Sable LS but after 160K, it was on its last legs and went to the grave yard. She allowed mid to high 30's on the highway before I knew what I was doing but around town, ouch... Stopped FAS', NICE-On's and keep your baby rolling with anticipatory focus, smart braking and rabbit timing will be your guide to higher FE in the city.
___Good Luck
___Wayne

Re: Anybody here with a Taurus or Sable?
I looked through the fuel logs and the only one I could find (that was a similar body style) was one that runs on Ethanol... so that's not really good for comparing... Haven't looked for any other years, but I'm gonna go ahead and add my vehicle to the logs now.

Re: Anybody here with a Taurus or Sable?
My younger son has our 96 Taurus now. Figure on 30 mpg on the highway with the cruise set at 65 mph. Comfy ride, but you're better than me if you get good mileage around town-- low 20's probably.

Re: Anybody here with a Taurus or Sable?
I had one briefly then unfortunately it got totalled.
You can get 30 on the highway if you are careful. In town mileage is challenging. You have to drive very carefully but you can get 25 or so.
The A/C in mine was awesome, which didn't help my FE any....

Re: Anybody here with a Taurus or Sable?
I'm pretty sure it's a manual, but check with Cpeter38 - he's got a Focus and a Contour. The Contour may be as close to the Taurus as you find for the moment.

Re: Anybody here with a Taurus or Sable?
It is an automatic. The Contour would be close but the engine is very different I believe... not sure though.
I manage to get 25 city on a VERY good day. Usually low 20's.
100% PURE highway, I get high 20's. Best tank ever was 29, which was from one gas station to another with (nonstop) only freeway in-between.

Re: Anybody here with a Taurus or Sable?
You on the Duratec or Vulcan powerplant?
In the next gen up from yours, the Vulcan got taller gears than the Duratec.
22 MPG is your current mileage, which isn't too shabby.
You probably already know this, but cruising in N with the engine off is probably a poor idea in your ride.
Remember that the next gen after your model was about 200 lbs heavier than yours, so you should be able to beat those guys in real-world around-town performance.
Welcome aboard!
