Reasons not to own a Prius continue to be eliminated.

Wayne Gerdes - CleanMPG - Aug. 26, 2009

2010 European Prius-III – Rated at 60 mpgUS combined on the NEDC.

The all-new 2010 Toyota Prius has achieved a maximum 5-star vehicle safety rating in the latest Euro NCAP ratings. With an overall score of 83 %, the Prius is the third Toyota model to be granted a 5-star rating this year, after the new Toyota Avensis and iQ.

The new Prius highlights Toyota’s engineering capabilities in developing a vehicle chassis that delivers strong environmental, dynamic and safety performance. Upgraded with the very latest in active, passive and pedestrian impact safety features, the Prius’ impact absorbing body shell, seven airbags and active headrests are only the beginning.

Additional standard safety features include Electronically-Controlled Braking (ECB) incorporating Brake Assist (BA), Traction Control (TRC) and Vehicle Stability Control+ (VSC+). The new Prius is also available with a new pre-emptive, Pre-Crash Safety System (PCS), incorporating Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC).

Since the vehicles launch in June, over 17,000 have been sold to date.

Re: 2010 Toyota Prius-III earns 5 stars in Euro NCAP crash tests

Glad to see this posted as most of the hoopla in Insight-land has been on the NCAP scores of the Insight. Hopefully this will speed the acceptance of more fuel efficient vehicles by the everyday-consumer.

I have to ask, though, how you arrive at the 83% overall score? My calculation has it at 81%? Did I miss something on the NCAP website?

JP

Child Occupant: 40.1 * .82
Pedestrian: 24.4 * .68
Safety Assist: 6 * .86
Total: 82.53

___The 2010 Honda Insight-II on the other hand scored as follows:

Adult Occupant: 32.5 * .9
Child Occupant: 36.5 * .74

Re: 2010 Toyota Prius-III earns 5 stars in Euro NCAP crash tests

Hi JP:

___The Prius is exactly as stated at 82.53 and thus the 83. I missed the extra 5 in the Insight's child rating. Anything over 80% and you receive 5 *s which both did.

___Regarding a total average of the four, I do not believe that is the way Euroncap comes up with a composite. Toyota of Europe is quoting 83 as a weighted average which matches the calcs.

___Good Luck

___Wayne
