Thumbs up Thanks to the helpful advice from everyone in the Hypermiling community

I’m amazed at the some of the trip MPG numbers I have started seeing lately.
Thanks to the helpful advice from everyone in the Hypermiling community.

Extra thank you to Right Lane Cruiser at CleanMPG.com for the personal attention with his tips.
-His example at the MNHG meet,
-His time form work to personally call me with advice when I found myself in a Prius rental
-His extend lunch hour (without lunch) to give me a P&G clinic.

Right Lane Cruiser said he could help me break my 50mpg barrier. I
was getting High 40’s, but not many 50+ trips, and never a tank at 50+.

I have now had a tank over 50mpg and have started seeing 60~ for trips.

Information is always Key.
Here are my latest bits of info that are allowing me to put Right Lane Cruiser’s advice to work.

-I was trying to pulse at too low of an RPM. Found my engines BSFC chart at ecomodder.com
now pulsing up to 2,800. Just not enough torque under 2,000.

-My cars ECU would take too long to start reporting to Scangauge after a FAS,
so It was imposable to see P&G results at high speeds.
Adding a MPGuino info about the gauge found at ecomodder.com.
That display fixed my P&G reporting issue.
I am now running Scangauge And MPGuino.

(note: if you’re looking to buy a gauge and only 1 gauge - Scangauge is my recommendation to nearly everyone)

(note: same post being put at both ecomodder.com and CleanMPG.com)

I'm thinking I might have the same problem. I wish I could find that chart for the Ford 2.3.

Re: Thanks to the helpful advice from everyone in the Hypermiling community

Hi Allen:

___Congrats on the spectacular numbers and nice to see Sean pick up some recognition as he is a spectacular instructor

___A bit of a conundrum is the 2,800 R's advice. The Corolla XRS with the 2.4L I4we reviewed last year is quite a bit different than the Vibe/Corolla based 1.8L but that one would pull more mpg's and I would never consider anything near torque peaks in that or anything else including the 2.3L Ranger, the 2.4L Accord and 3.5L MDX, Yaris, Prius-I, -II or -III, HCH-I or -II, FEH, FFH and any current diesel. Even bikes with their torque peaks well up in the 5 + K range pull the best FE in the 3 to 4K range at most... A BSFC map is a WOT map done in third or fourth gear on the dyno, not a BMEP map at partial load and throttle. Even BMEP maps are suspect because they do not match up with the on the road optimum Pulse rates by any means.

___Sean taught you about stepping up the aFCD between each cycle and I suspect 70 mpg is doable from a lot lower RPM allowing a lot longer longevity for your 1.8L. Head out to an empty country road and spend an hour or so to dial it in. BSFC maps are not even close to the best FE for me but YMMV and you are doing very well indeed of course.

___Good Luck and we will see you at Hybridist!

___Wayne

Hi Wayne, Thanks for the response!

I was hoping someone (you) would bring up the RPM's.

Are you saying keeping the RPM's lower is better for the ICE life span?
If so, this is an important consideration for keeping RPM's lower.

maybe we can get Sean to chime in, as he has experienced the low RPM Torque VS Vehicle weight I am battling.

Here is what I have found with RPM's in my car.
I can feel Torque starts coming in good at 32~ and that fits with the spike in BSFC chart
Max torque is up around 40~42 (Chuckel... been a LONG time since I hit those RPM's)
below 19~ i get little to no acceleration, and it there is any hill forget it.

to be more accurate I have trying to pulse from 20~ to 26~. sometimes hitting 19, sometimes hitting 28.

I will be experimenting more, but would be grateful for any advice.

Thanks!

on a side note: with the increase in FAS I am running into a battery voltage issue. It's a new problem for me, but I have seen others talk about the same issue.

Congratulations, Allen!

Five years ago, EPA+15% seemed like scaling Everest without oxygen.

Now it's more like 80% over the EPA for a personal record.

Strangely, I never screamed the people doing it were lying, I just tried stuff, and just as important changed my behavior. I halfway got it when Wayne took me for a clinic, then I connected the dots.

Re: Thanks to the helpful advice from everyone in the Hypermiling community

Hi, Allen -- I'm glad you are having the success you've been looking for!

The car did seem to have a remarkable lack of low end torque when I drove it... it actually reminded me a bit of Ken's truck. My Elantra has a lot more torque at low RPM and so did Brian's Yaris when I drove it. Since I only had the one drive in it I'm not sure exactly what would get the best results for you, but usually RPM over about 2300 to 2400 is not going to get you the highest numbers possible. I like to pulse between 1500 and 2300 for my P&G and 'Lantrific gets phenomenal results in that range.

Have you ever driven another Matrix or Vibe? Tim (Doax), do you have a lack of torque below 2K in your Matrix?

What are your load values showing at the low when pulsing, Allen?

Regardless of what we find, you've definitely made a break through and now you just have to fine tune.

Re: Thanks to the helpful advice from everyone in the Hypermiling community

My 2003 is a slightly different beast (in 05 they went to drive by wire), but it is otherwise the same AFAIK. I haven't had any problems accelerating under 2000 rpms. It doesn't have a lot of power, but I don't really have problems with it. I'd say its normal.

Don't forget that the EPA numbers have changed drastically since 5 year ago.
