Fuel costs push
rebound in car sales
so far in '06

Mercury News
Cars are making a comeback, as high gas prices and a slew of new, more fuel-efficient models have begun to attract buyers. In the first nine months of 2006, passenger car purchases rose 2.1 percent nationwide, while the sales of truck, sport-utility vehicles and minivans fell 9.2 percent.
Doing well: new or redesigned subcompacts such as the Toyota Yaris, Honda Fit and Chevy Aveo; well-regarded compacts such as the Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic and Mazda3; new-gen hatchback-wagons such as the Dodge Caliber; and hybrids such as the Toyota Prius.
For the 2007 model year, bestsellers such as the Toyota Camry and Nissan Altima are redesigned, and those models plus the mid-size Saturn Aura sedan do or will offer hybrid versions.
Among luxury cars, leading citizens such as the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and Lexus LS 460 promise innovative technology in scrumptious packages.
