Hypermilers Attempting Fuel Economy Record in a Honda Insight
Can They Maintain 150 Miles Per Gallon for 2000 Miles?
Well it looks like the "hypermilers" are at it again. A group of six men are attempting to drive for an incredible 2000 miles on a single tank of gas in an unmodified Honda Insight. If calculated out, this means they will average a-jaw-dropping 150 miles per gallon or more!
Many of the men have been participants in other mpg competitions such as the
Hybridfest MPG Challenge, the Tour Del Sol, or the
record breaking mpg marathon in a Toyota Prius.
The course they are following is 100 miles outside of Tulsa, Oklahoma. The team purposely chose it for its gentle terrain. To complete their journey they will drive 50 laps around a 40-mile loop of highway.
This time the crew consists of men from around the country:
- Randall Burkhalter - OK
- Justin Fons - WI
- Wayne Gerdes - IL
- Louis Hudgin - AZ
- Dan Kroushl - PA
- Bill Kinney - WA
So the real question is why would they try something like this at all? Wayne Gerdes states "This is the Insight’s last year of production and [the Insight] will be departing with the accolades it most certainly deserves if any of us have something to say about it.
