The trouble with pips

Just got back from my first long distance road trip with the Prius. Great car, but that last pip's a doosey! I had two pips left for eighty miles or so and went to a blinking pip in a mile!

Luckily I was in the metro by this time so I pulled over at the next exit and went to the closest gas station (10.426 gallons pumped.)

Note to self: Refill at two pips!

Re: The trouble with pips

Jennifer, check out the thread started by Dan -- XGauge (CAN-bus) for Dummies.... There is a gauge you can program in to measure fuel usage which may help you get a better idea of just how much you have left?

Re: The trouble with pips

Thanks for the link! I really need to get the scan gauge out of the closet and on the Prius. At first I was in sensory overload but now I am comfortable enough that I can start playing.

Re: The trouble with pips

I'm gonna need to set up that one on my SG. I refueled a couple of tanks ago at one PIP that started flashing (485 miles) as I was waiting for my pump and could only get 8.6 or so into it. Just yesterday I went down to one solid PIP at 428 miles. Wonder what the xgauge would say I have now and if I could trust it. I can't ever remember getting more than 9 gallons in a fill - ever. Guess I just have a small bladder.

Re: The trouble with pips

I also have a weigh your pip thread and I'm looking for data on when peoples pips fall. Just need FCD tank MPG and FCD tank miles at the time (or close to it) that the pip fell. From there I can solve for what a falling pip means in terms of gallons in the tank.

Interestingly enough that XGauge is very informative. The XGauge gives you 40 pips instead of 10 pips. My pip flashed at 12.5% of my tank left or at 5 XGauge pips left.
