Subaru April 2012 Sales up 6.3%
Best April sales in the companys history.
Wayne Gerdes - CleanMPG - May 1, 2012
2012 Subaru Impreza $17,495 to start and a 27/36 mpgUS city/highway rating make for an impressive AWD choice.
When Subaru introduced its all-new fourth-generation 2012 Impreza four-door and five-door compacts at the 2011 New York International Auto Show (NYIAS), something was different. The familiar ungainly looking AWD hatches were left behind and in their place was an all-new and modern small sports wagon/crossover. It arrived with an all-new 2.0L powertrain that provided an incredible 36-percent improvement in combined fuel economy over the outgoing model without hybridization or adding a diesel along with increased room, greater agility and a higher level of refinement.
While I am not into AWD because it is unnecessary fuel consumer for most, for those that do need it, the Impreza is very competitively priced and reasonably efficient as well!
Subaru April Sales Results
Subaru this morning reported record sales for April 2012 of 26,310 vehicles, a six percent gain over April 2011. The company also reported year-to-date sales of 106,878, a 16 percent gain over prior year.
Year-to-date sedan sales for the brand have also increased with the all-new Impreza up 157 percent over prior year and Legacy sales up 12 percent.
Subaru Highlights
While the Outback was a bigger seller (8,548 vehicles sold in Aprilm ,down 9.7%), last month belonged to the slick looking AWD Impreza reaching sales of 6,791 vehicles in April, up 124.2% compared to April of 2011.

Re: Subaru April 2012 Sales up 6.3%
The new Impreza is a HUGE improvement in mpg over the past one, which embarrassingly only barely did better than its larger Forester and Legacy/Outback cousins. Besides the mpg and space improvements, the Impreza abandons the horribly unreliable open-deck 2.5L engine that has been the base engine across most of Subaru's lineup for a decade.
I had fantastic experiences with my two 2.2L '90s Subarus. I was impressed that they were screwed together even tighter, and cost me less to maintain, than the Hondas I'd had before. But I walked away because of the low mpg and the 2.5L engines in the newer models.
Now that the Impreza has been revolutionized, let's hope for big improvements in the larger Subies as their turn comes around for redesign over the next couple of years.
Not that I'll be buying one. Even as an outdoorsy type in the rugged Northwest I do not need AWD. Especially since the new traction control systems are sooo much better at making use of the available grip in 2wd cars. AWD still carries an mpg penalty, and there are some maintenance penalties (some things like a new clutch always cost 2x as much due to the need to yank the whole driveline, and if something goes wrong with even a fairly new tire -- which DOES happen to me periodically -- you need to replace all 4). I keep hoping that Subaru will reawaken to its pre-1997 roots and consider offering FWD again, but I don't really expect them to.
