Comparing MPG with 11 Elantra with 08 Honda Civic

I have an 81 mile round trip commute that takes me from 500’ to 4300’ (mtn roads, no freeway and 14 traffic lights). In my 08 civic (Automatic) that has a scanguage, I average between 37 to 44 mpg for the RT commute. My 11 Elantra, GLS auto, with only 650 miles on it (Still breaking in) has average between 35 and 37 mpg for this commute. Since the Elantra is new, I’m figuring that I will see better MPG in the Elantra after it breaks in.

Re: Comparing MPG with 11 Elantra with 08 Honda Civic

Indeed, you should. The Elantra is rated 4 mpg better both highway and city. Since you're beating EPA's estimates by 1-8 mpg with your Civic, I'm betting you'll see 41-48 mpg figures with the Elantra soon.

Re: Comparing MPG with 11 Elantra with 08 Honda Civic

Hi Regor:

There will not be that much difference between your Elantra with 1K miles on it or 5K miles on it.

Since the Civic w/ the AT can be FAS'ed and the Elantra cannot, is that some of the difference?

More importantly, how do you like your Elantra

Wayne

So far so good. I have a little more head and leg room as the driver (Not much, but I'm 6'2"). Drives good. Haven't hooked the scanguage to it. Don't care for the xm radio (Free for the first 90 days).

Re: Comparing MPG with 11 Elantra with 08 Honda Civic

Very interesting compare data. I drive an 08 Civic. Sure seems like the epa rating for the 08 model year is/was conservative. I get better than the 26mpg city rating in the dead of winter even when flogging the daylights out of it (which I've been known to do on occasion ;-).

You use the stereo.

I'd like to have a car stereo setup that's an amp, a volume control and a slot to put an mp3 player in. All this CD and radio stuff is sooooo last century.

Any updates on the mileage you are getting? I'm quite interested to see what you end up discovering about the new Elantra's capabilities on your route.

I'm just below 1000 miles. I've been averaging right around 37mpg on my commute which is a little below what the civic gets.

I haven't hooked the scangauge up yet due to it being in the fuse box. If I attach the cable, I can't close lid for the box. I might only use it for long hauls. The elantra is primary the wife's car. The Civic and Silverado are mine.
