Obama: Investments in energy sector to create 700,000 jobs.
Obama has called for 1 million plug-in vehicles on the roads by 2015.
David Shepardson - DETROITNEWS - July 8, 2010
President Barack Obama said he expects the government's investments in energy programs to create 700,000 jobs over the next few years.
Today, Obama toured Smith Electric Vehicles, a producer of commercial delivery trucks in Kansas City, Mo., that operates out of a shuttered jet engine plant. The company -- which just hired its 50th worker -- is among those that received $2.4 billion in cash grants to boost electric vehicle and battery research last August.
"One of those decisions was to provide critical funding to promising, innovative businesses like Smith Electric. And because we did, there is a thriving enterprise here instead of an empty, darkened warehouse," Obama said, according to a copy of his remarks provided by the White House. "Because of the grant that went to this company, we can hear the sounds of machines humming and people doing their jobs instead of the quiet of an empty building where the workers were laid off long ago." ... I'll believe it when I see it. Thus far, none of Obama's hugely expensive endeavors have created any jobs at all.

Ok Let's have a light debate. I figured you would take this one on. This thread has to do with the energy policy, not the politics as you seem to be taking it towards, so let's get it out of the way.
To what "hugely expensive endeavors" are you referring? This would be completely subjective and being such a broad assumption, please show that you are not just trying to make a political hijack of the news info.

BM, if you're referring to the stimulus package, it did produce jobs.

If that's a good investment I can imagine the 700,000 energy sector jobs aren't gonna be sustainable either.

This statement doesn't take into account the overall effect on the economy had those 2.5 million jobs been lost. Additionally, not all that money has been spent to date. Getting loans would be practically impossible even with a good credit score. It wouldn't even be the scores that matter but the availability of funds.

A decade ago, there was talk the internet would bring a .com boom....no overnight boom, but a trickle of new jobs (with too much offshoring )
Alt Energy jobs are probably in the slow-cook mode.

Re: Obama: Investments in energy sector to create 700,000 jobs.
JusBringit,
Jobs created by the government and payed by the government need to be constantly funded. If there is no market demand for those industries or jobs how can you call that stimulus? You aren't stimulating anything... You are creating a bubble of temp jobs and money borrowed yet again from the future.
You are proping up failed industries... Hence all the wasted time and money that was rolled out to GM and Chryslar (Spell check not here). Whenever money is wasted it pulls money from one sector that can be profitable to one that isn't. Plus you have the devaluation of the currency. By stimulating and bailing out you are hit by multiple things, wasted money, inflation, bubbles, mal investments... I could go on.

Just ran across this about one particular stimulus program that's been successful at job creation.
