Out-of-Control Prius Stopped by Patrol Car
Frantic Driver Calls 911 When Accelerator Sticks; California Highway Patrol Put Car in Front of Prius to Slow it Down
Ben Tracy - CBSNEWS - March 8,2010
Not again --Ed.
On the very day Toyota was making a high-profile defense of its cars, one of them was speeding out of control.
It was a pretty frightening Monday afternoon for a driver in San Diego. The California Highway Patrol said the driver of a Toyota Prius called 911 around 1:30 p.m. to say the car's accelerator was stuck and he couldn't slow it down.
The caller was driving eastbound on Interstate 8 near San Diego as this was happening, reports CBS News correspondent Ben Tracy. At one point the car was traveling at 90 mph. ... [Read More]

Re: Out-of-Control Prius Stopped by Patrol Car
Knew there was too much power in the Prius. Could not 'slow it down.'
Brakes
Park button
Shift to reverse
Shift to Neutral and hold until it shifts
Press power button and hold 3 seconds for shutdown
Thought the academy awards were last night...

I guess that's it. Time to trade every Prius on the road for a Crown Vic.

Re: Out-of-Control Prius Stopped by Patrol Car
Here's a bit more, having read a couple of accounts:
CHP "talked him down" over the loud speaker, from 94 mph to 50, using the emergency brakes and extra pressure on normal brakes. The driver then felt comfortable in shutting off the engine and he coasted to a safe stop. Driver claims that the accelerator got stuck.
Toyota says it's sent a specialist to investigate.
No specific word on model year or whether it had gone through any recall procedures, that I could find (so far).

Re: Out-of-Control Prius Stopped by Patrol Car
I have nothing against toyota, in fact I own two of them myself, and this guy may have been a total idiot to not be able to stop his car. With that being said I have to be honest and say that no matter who is making the cars, a car that requires a 3 second pause while holding down a button, to kill the engine or a pause to go into neutral is a stupid and unsafe design. 3 seconds in a panic situation is a VERY long time.

Re: Out-of-Control Prius Stopped by Patrol Car
I got an email from the Toyota Press Room @4:26 pm this afternoon with the following information:
Quote:
Report of Prius with Stuck Pedal
This afternoon (Monday, March 8), Toyota learned of a report that a California Highway Patrol (CHP) unit was dispatched in response to a 911 call from a motorist driving a Prius on Interstate 8 in San Diego County who said the accelerator pedal was stuck. The report states that the CHP unit slowed in front of the vehicle and acted as a brake to bring it to a stop. Toyota has dispatched a field technical specialist to San Diego to investigate the report and offer assistance.
