38MPG today

Got 38MPG in my Elantra AT today, as reported by the AVG gauge on the Sgii. I've been plugging in the cable after I start the car, so it may have missed the first few seconds.

This was about 5.5 miles, and part of the way is a steep uphill for about 0.5 to 1 mile, then a gentle downslope for the next 2 miles.

Re: 38MPG today

Are you unplugging the scangauge every time you stop the car? I found mine worked perfectly if I connected with the ignition in ON position (but engine off) and didn't develop problems unless I detached it.

Re: 38MPG today

I unplug every time I turn off the engine, due to the speedo problems I mentioned elsewhere. If I knew when the ECU is shut down, I'd have a better idea of when to do it.

38 mpg with an AT Elantra is excellent. That long downhill must help a lot.

Yes, yes it does. The downhill changes into a slight uphill, turns left, tops out, and goes down again and makes a right descending turn to a series of lights. Usually I find one of those lights to be red. I mean, those lights are synced and I'll be caught somewhere in the middle. It's a good place to coast in light traffic, and I'd do it in neutral if I knew that it was legal.

The total vertical displacement is about 200 feet in 2-3 miles. The *uphill* before that rises from a few feet to over 200 feet in 1-2 miles. That's a 1-in-60 slope coming down and 1-in-25 going up, I think, if I've got the math right.

Re: 38MPG today

Maybe I wasn't clear? The problem doesn't manifest itself through stops and starts of the engine in my car if I can get the SG to connect correctly initially. I leave it in the car plugged in for months and months at a time and never see an issue.

Interesting. So the problem is caused by plugging/unplugging the OBD end of the cable? Weird. Maybe it's shorting some pins while being plugged in.

Okay, I'm going to play with my existing cable a bit. LL did send me a new cable, I got it today but I'll hold it aside for a while.

Re: 38MPG today

The drive to my wife's former office was the same way, with an uphill first mile where I'd get only 15-17 mpg. The next 2 miles involved a steep downhill and a short steep uphill. If I didn't have other traffic around, I could approach 40 mpg in that 3 mile drive. Going home, I could use the elevation to my advantage, drop to sea level, and coax 50+ mpg out of the 6 mile round-trip.

Re: 38MPG today

... And I got poor mileage on the way back. 20 or 26, I didn't bother to remember. I blame the rain.
