I'm a bad influence
I don't discuss hypermiling much in my personal life. I usually just tell people that I drive slow to get better gas mileage, so I wasn't expecting one of my son's friends (call him Karl) to get in trouble with the high school police liaison for hypermiling.
Karl is a good kid (likely valedictorian, Ivy-league bound) who has problems because his parents are too wealthy. Namely they buy him cars and pay for his gas--which wouldn't be a problem if he drove his cars like he owned them. Instead, so far he has made a big contribution to the Big 2.5 by totaling his first two cars, a jeep and a mustang. After his parents bought him his most recent car, a yellow mustang with black racing stripe, my son discussed my hypermiling with him. Apparently it had some effect as Karl is reporting low 40's in his new 'stang.
The problem is that now the local school bus drivers are complaining to the police liaison about Karl holding them up. I guess you know you're a hypermiler if school bus drivers complain about _you_ holding up traffic.

Re: I'm a bad influence
Sounds like a good influence to me!! Those school buses drive too fast anyway.

Re: I'm a bad influence
I live in a school zone, speed limit 25, and when I come home from work the lights are flashing for the 25 limit. Occasionally, I'll have a school bus behind me that doesn't seem to understand that the limit applies to them too, so I feel obligated to drive down to the school at the posted 25. It adds about 3/4 mile, but school buses speeding in a school zone just pisses me off.

Re: I'm a bad influence
I feel the same way about school zones. I drive through one on my way to work. I intentionally leave so I can catch the end of the time range and drive 25 at around 1100-1200 RPMs. The way I think about school zones is: If my kid went to that school would I want someone driving 35-40 through there? Annoys some people but it is legal and gives me a good excuse for driving really slow.

Re: I'm a bad influence
Now this would make cops really suspect something. A yellow mustang with black racing stripes driven by a teenager doing speed limit and no asscar driving. Not something you would see everyday.
