Confused About DWL
I'm confused about the technique for DWL. Do I want to maintain a specific throttle position, 6 for instance, or do I want to maintain a steady fuel economy by slight variations of the throttle? I have a six cyl auto with ScanGauge. (I have read, and re-read, and re-read Beating the EPA).

DWL is slowly relieving the pressure off the throttle and generally maintains about the same maybe slightly lower fuel economy. maintaing a steady throttle position will give very different results

Hi Nanci:
___If you do not have a SG, you will maintain throttle position. With a ScanGauge, you can get a little more out of your ride by maintaining FE while climbing, cresting and reaccelerating with gravity back to somewhat steady state.
___There are more variants depending on how steep to initial slope is, the approach angle and speed, the elevation delta from initial to final and what kind of terrain is beyond the finish of the hill or overpass..

I'll clarify a little bit extra. If you're not going over steep hills and there are slight variances on your terrain (slight inclines on declines), maintain your throttle position, this will give you the best economy.
For steeper hills, you can usually drop off pressure as you come closer to the point where your car is about to downshift..

What about hills where you're car wouldn't downshift?

as long as you dont downshift maintain throttle, or just pulse if you can do so in your top gear to get a glide on the other side of the gradient.

Is this true even in a car with a CVT, like my Altima Hybrid?

I'm not very familiar with a cvt. I believe the transmission optimizes the gears based on load requirements so I do believe it would work the same. I suggest that you watch your rpms so that they drop when necessary(ascending a low grade). Someone with more knowledge may be able to give even better information.

Thanks for the info. I'll watch the RPMs. Anyone else have experience with a CVT?
