Honda pricing on replacing spark plugs
Just for giggles I was checking into some pricing of services at my local Honda dealer & one of the things I inquired about was replacing the spark plugs. I don't know what they make their platinum plugs out of but it must be platinum & jewel studded.
The price of their plugs is $19.95 each(8) and $70 for the service. I called three different dealers and all had the same pricing. Anyone else had this experience? Is there some kind of magic in those plugs that makes them so much more expensive over the normal 2-10 dollar plugs out there?

It's the magic of the dealer markup

Re: Honda pricing on replacing spark plugs
Are they indexed like the ones in the Insight? They are coded differently in that car because the spark should be directed carefully -- it won't run as well if you mix and match. Possibly your car is the same way?

Re: Honda pricing on replacing spark plugs
They are iridium plugs, so yes, they are more expensive than your average plug.
But they retail for $18, can be had at Honda discount parts stores for $13, and are about $10 at discount spark plug stores.
You can go to the Denso web site to find the Denso part number that is equivalent to the Honda part number. That might help you find them for less as well.

By the end of summer I will be going over 80K miles and was just looking into the pricing now. Basically had a list of things I wanted to get this year, emailed the service mgr at my Honda dealer and that was part of the reply. I know they are suppose to be good for 100k miles but the car was run hard by the previous owner for the first 70k miles and want to be sure the mileage I am getting is mine not his, so to speak.
Update:
Just got another email from the service department and they wanted me to know that in checking their records they have never had to replace a set of these yet. They don't even keep them in stock and would have to order them if they deemed it necessary to replace them.

Re: Honda pricing on replacing spark plugs
I really doubt they are indexed-that must be rare beyond belief.I had no idea the Insight had indexed plugs.I remember Jacobs-aftermarket ignition folks-tried to popularize indexing the plugs-I think they pointed the "opening" toward the intake valves. They sold washers to space, and index plugs.

Re: Honda pricing on replacing spark plugs
$9.35 each or n$11.71(not sure why it says you need 8 of these or the difference between the laser cut) at http://www.sparkplugs.com/results_ap...1&AAIA=1430772
Not to thread jack, but has anyone tried the Pulsar plugs? They are hella expensive at $25 each!

Re: Honda pricing on replacing spark plugs
You can absolutely index the plugs on your own car. I did. Just mark the ceramic with a sharpee and change the washers if you have to - but you shouldn't have to change the washers because each plug has about ~180 degrees of exposed spark.
But yeah, sounds like dealer markup. Do it yourself!
