Re: CleanMPG reviews the 2010 Kawasaki KLX 250SF

I bought an 09 KLX250SF and was very dissapointed. It is so underpowered I was afraid to break it in on the road, since 'should not' exceed 4000rpms (at that engine speed, the bike is hardly doing 40mph in 6th gear!) and most of the roads nearby are 45 to 55 mph; needless to say, dangerous speeds for this little bike. Please note I am in the high desert in California, and this motorcycle is VERY hard to start.

Taking a chance, I replaced the stock muffler with an FMF bolt on, the front primary sprocket with a 15 tooth and had Sprocket specialists make an aluminum 36 tooth rear to replace the stock 39 tooth. Now, it feels a lot more like a motorcycle! The next two mods I will do are to rejet the carb, then eventually get a 340cc big bore kit.

If all of that does not get me the performance I want, I will move up to a standard, the Honda XL650, and make the super motard modifications there.

My opinion
