Re: Cavalier coolant temperature ?

My last vehicle was a 2001 Cavalier (automatic; 2.2). I Don't know if this helps, but it ran between 200-210, based on the stock temperature gauge. I managed to eek out 35 mpg in it.

Just to make...

Re: Is 'miles per gallon' deceptive?

Best online argument I've seen in a long time. :woot:

I called the American method the 'underdog position' because I understood that the rest of the world uses the liters/100 km system. I could be...

Re: Is 'miles per gallon' deceptive?

I'm a contrarian. When I see an underdog position, I can't help taking it. :)

The controversy was discussed on AutoBlogGreen (http://www.autobloggreen.com/2008/06/20/forget-mpg-lets-move-to-gpm/) a...

Re: 37.6 mpg in a Cavalier

Congratulations on the 37.6 mpg in a Cavalier!

I managed to get 35 mpg in a 2001 Cavalier (automatic) before I sold mine and got a Honda Civic. (43 + average mpg)

I'm surprised about this kind of...

Re: 3rd tank, 40+ mpg!

Congratulations on the 41.6 mpg! I don't doubt that one can get 45 mpg in a new Civic, as I just got 44.8 mpg.

Re: FINALLY!!!! 40mpg trip

Congratulations on the 40 mpg! :bananapartyhat:

I never had a 40 mpg before I got a Civic. 40 in an Accord is a greater accomplishment, of course, because it has lower FE according to the EPA.

Re: Excellent Article about the Tire-Inflation Comments by Obama

Possibly, but the nature of politics is to latch onto anything, no matter how small, and create strawman arguments to make the opponent look foolish. :(

Otherwise, though, I can't disagree with...

Re: Excellent Article about the Tire-Inflation Comments by Obama

Whatever happened to the 'conservative' principle of personal responsibility and not relying on the government? Oh, I forgot the memo: '...conservatism now means we spend all our money and run up...

Re: What Got you into Hypermiling? (Poll)

A combination:

1. At first, it was safety. I found myself driving about 90 mph or so (on a section of I-40 outside Knoxville, TN) in the left lane, and there were cars not far in front of me and...

Re: What to buy?

Your mileage may vary (pun intended), but I decided to go with the Civic LX over the Corolla or the Fit because it was a better deal.

I got ABS on the Civic for the same $$ as the Corolla dealer....

Re: Weight vs Fuel economy

Sorry about any misunderstanding. :)

I personally let the tank get no lower than 1/4 full most of the time. I don't want to risk running low and harming the fuel pump. Also, if there are unexpected...

Re: Weight vs Fuel economy

I considered storing fuel after Hurricane Katrina, but decided against it. When prices are rising, frequent buying will save money (dollar cost averaging), as long as other costs are kept in check....

MPG improved

I have heard that a vehicle's mpg will improve somewhat after a few thousand miles. Is this correct, and, if so, why?

I just got 43.63 mpg (=436.40 miles/10.002 gallons) on my second measured tank...

Re: Gas-guzzling SUVs and light trucks become an obstacle for marketers

I was more or less just curious about what mpg a truck could get if it was hypermiled mildly. As pointed out, I did not figure FE when I had the Mazda.

I would not trade my new Civic for one, but...

Re: Gas-guzzling SUVs and light trucks become an obstacle for marketers

Indeed. I got rid of my ancient Mazda B-series about 5 years ago, but wish I had kept it as a second vehicle. (I didn't calculate FE back then.) Maybe used trucks will also come down in price, as...

Re: When a hybrid isn't enough - hypermilers go to the extreme

I have a theory (I take it semi-seriously at times.) that most people are sociopaths. That's just one more reason to not be concerned with what the majority thinks.

Re: First 40mpg +

Thanks for the advice about headrests and ignition. I removed all headrests except the driver's side. I intended to replace the passenger side if I had a passenger (a rare event).

I did not know...

Re: First 40mpg +

One could get whimsical about this weight cutting:

1. Lose weight. All hypermilers would have to get down to 10% bodyfat.
2. Shave one's hair and beard/mustache. Every ounce counts!
3. Buy clothing...

Re: First 40mpg +

Thanks for calculating the mpg savings of losing 1 pound. :D

Actually, I know that losing such a small amount of weight would not gain a noticeable increase in mpg. That was just a funny idea to...

Re: my 89 civic Finally GOT 41mpg

Congratulations! :)

I also just got about that (40.67 mpg), but in a new Honda Civic.

Do you know if the older Civics are capable of getting better mileage than newer ones? I know there have...

First 40mpg +

I recently got 40.67 mpg (326 miles/8.015 gallons) in a new Honda Civic LS. (My previous best had been 35 mpg in a 2001 Chevy Cavalier.) This was my first test after using most of the tank from the...

Re: New Civic LX owner

This is similar to my situation. I just got a 2008 Civic LX on the 12th of this month. I commute 21 miles each way. The roads can be rather hilly (not mountainous though), but at least I don't hit a...
