Re: Hypermile to the track to flog my car

I think if I had been *really* paying attention I would have somehow seen the bloody mary mix, the celery, and the vodka bottle coming at me. He would have just driven right on past if she didn't...

Re: Hypermile to the track to flog my car

And that would be Solo I, not Solo II. (And we run at an old airport.)

I probably will never have the stones or cash to "graduate."

Re: Hypermiling: EPA estimates vs. your car

You all know that strictly speaking, the HSD has neither neutral nor reverse?
Neutral - decouples input and output shaft.
Reverse - causes the output shaft to rotate counter to the input shaft.

And...

Re: Hypermile to the track to flog my car

Yeah, and on a closed course your argument might have merit.

I don't have the luxury to drive on closed public roads. You?

Re: Hypermiling: EPA estimates vs. your car

Shifting from one gear through neutral to another is engaging a gear.
Shifting into neutral is *not* engaging a gear.

Any questions?

Re: Hypermile to the track to flog my car

In Solo II (aka autocross) the *fastest* cars will reach low 60 mph at the *fastest* part of the course.

My peak speed at an autocross so far has been 56 mph. (Rev limit 2nd gear.)

It's not...

Re: Hypermiling: EPA estimates vs. your car

Massachusetts Turnpike Authority keeps it simple, just a blanket prohibition:

Coasting. No operator may operate a motor vehicle without engaging the gears of the
motor vehicle's transmission.

Re: What do You do with Stop Signs?

BIKE PATH. The stop signs on the bike path are *unavoidable.* And I can't get any lower gasoline consumption with or without stop signs.

Re: What do You do with Stop Signs?

Driver's ed starts today.

The question asked on the weekend - "Do we really have to stop at stop signs?"
"What do you think?"
"Yes, but, well, nobody else does."

That last statement is not strictly...

Re: Hypermiling: EPA estimates vs. your car

Feel compelled to add some corrections here.

Many of the old coasting laws date from the days when transmissions could not be put into gear without the *operator* synchronizing the input and output...

Re: Hypermile to the track to flog my car

Max braking grip PSI will be lower too.

I'm puzzled. I find that from time to time, no matter how much I plan and look ahead, someone does something truly stupid on the street.

Plan B and Plan C...

Re: Honda’s June 2009 sales off 32.4% vs. June of 2008

If my math is right (and it's always suspect) almost 30% improvement in hybrid sales june 2009 versus june 2008 (DSR).

And if memory serves, june 2008 was a record june for American Honda?

Just curious. How do Honda's hybrid sales for June 2009 compare to June 2008?

Wayne - seriously, that's the intersection. And that's the school.

I'm just curious. The g's before the apex don't count?

But let's look at the 33 m line through the corner.

Re: Autoweek editor riding with Wayne damns hypermiling

The 40-ish meter large circle is the 0.35 g line through the corner at 27 mph.

As you can see, that line intrudes agressively on anyone hapless enough to be turning left onto Rochester Rd. Luckily,...

Re: Autoweek editor riding with Wayne damns hypermiling

So, to summarize, you took Main Street which becomes Rochester Rd and took a left on Stoney Creek which becomes E Clarkston Rd.

Still don't remember that intersection?

Re: Autoweek editor riding with Wayne damns hypermiling

That "dirt road" isn't dirt, it is Rochester Road, just wet.
The west bound road is Stoney Creek Road.

Feel free to browse google maps....

Re: Risk of Speeding

Go to the original sources. In states that set the PSL to 85th percentile speed, the average speed is *below* the PSL, and only about 1 in 8 motorists is speeding.

Risk of Speeding

Over the past 30 years, there's been much good research on the risks associated with speeding and speed limits. But I've finally found the graphics that show the risk very clearly.

So, when...
