This is it exactly. The Smart fortwo is a tiny car with average fuel economy with what is by all accounts one of the worst automatic transmissions around. Worse, it costs about the same as a Honda...

My commute is about 10 miles one-way, so I'd be fine with it in general, I think. The problem wouldn't be day-to-day stuff -- my biggest fear would be unexpectedly driving out/running some errands...
