The Tundra Endeavour – Episode 1: The Challenge

Pretty nifty PR idea by Toyota making other manufacturers fidget and scramble.

Wayne Gerdes - CleanMPG - Sept. 15, 2012

The Toyota Tundra is forced to take on a near-impossible task before embarking on an historic mission.

We have already covered the initial story highlighting the Endeavour with the challenge put before the Tundra to tow it.

Tundra to Tow Shuttle to Retirement

New are the YouTube vid episodes and as it unfolds, I will try and keep them up to date. I will also add more on the Tundra which in its corner does offer the most car like interior of any full-size PU on the market. Maybe the most reliability too?

In any case, this is a fantastic idea and I doubt there are others to top it!

The Tundra unfortunately does not light me up due to its bottom of the class 13/18 mpgUS city/highway rating when equipped with the 5.7L V8. It does provide some serious power, as in 381 HP and 401 lb-ft. of torque but compared to the F-150’s 3.5L EcoBoost providing its owners with 365 HP and 420 lb-ft. of torque, and a class leading 16/22 mpgUS city/highway rating, the Tundra looks old. In addition, the F-150 frame and structure provide far more rigidity and toughness.

That said, it will be Toyota’s most powerful pickup, the Tundra that will be towing the Shuttle Endeavour to its final resting place at the California Science museum, not the F-150, RAM, or Silverado.

Maybe the interior has changed, but I much preferred the interior in the F150 SuperCrew we drove over the 2008 Tundra I'm used to.

Why a Jap truck ?. If any pickup, it should be a 150 or a 250.

Because the honor (and advertising value) goes to the highest bidder?

Using a Japanese brand truck makes about as much sense as putting a Shuttle in New York. That is, not very much. :

Hi All:

You know the Tundra is built right here in the USA? The manufacturing is done in San Antonio, Texas of all places.
