Hi All:

Another one of those updates from 2012 to the 13’s. The leather wrapped wheel of the 11’s and 12’s has a tightly textured surface whereas the 13’s are smooth leather all the way to the hand sewn seams. I like the 13's better ;)

Re: Hyundai’s Elantra Spells “Continuous Improvement”

Hi All:

A little on FE…

Driving to Fresno including 4.5 hours to cover 125 miles through LA rush hour on Friday night saw a 46.7 mpg segment running A/C the entire way. Driving into and then up to Yosemite’s Glacier Point and Half Dome (maybe > 7,000’ ASL a few times), back down to the Valley floor with the National Park hordes saw the aFCD down to just 31.3 mpg as we headed out. By the time we reached camp in Coarsegold, CA, it was up to 34.7 mpg with half the tank gone. There is a long ways to go to my basic minimums…

Filling up after driving through downtown LA on the 101 with A/C running hard the entire way to a Costco in Irvine saw the aFCD finally solidly above 40 at 40.8 mpg. Fill details?

Trip A/B = 501.7 miles * (1.031 actual miles traveled multiplier) = 517.25 actual miles traveled on 12.868 gallons = 40.2 mpgUS actual. Whooa that was close!

Hi all:

I dropped off the 2012 Elantra sedan about two hours ago and am now on a plane destined for Milwaukee. Another item to add to the list is pairing an older Motorola Razr via Bluetooth is hit or miss with the Navi equipped 2012. Same with the non-Navi 2013's. With the smartphone (Motorola RAZR MAXX), it pairs with both the old and new as soon as you fire up Bluetooth without a second thought

Re: Hyundai’s Elantra Spells “Continuous Improvement”

Hi All:

I did a review vid on the Eureka! Wolf Jaw 40L backpack and found this little beaut in the mix.

2012 Hyundai Elantra Limited on the Pacific.

Now that I am back in the 13 Elantra GT, I found another really neat thing. Hyundai removed the trunk and refueling door opener along the driver side door sill on the 13's as discussed previously and I thought that wasn’t good as now your gas tank is open to whoever wants to access it. Little did I know until this evening just before filling it up for an aFCD calibration run that if the doors are locked, the filler door is also locked.

Re: Hyundai’s Elantra Spells “Continuous Improvement”

Hi All:

Here are the details on the 2013 Hyundai Elantra GT aFCD and fuel economy calibration drive.

2013 Hyundai Elantra GT Review

Initial Fill at the Speedway in Gurnee, IL.

RT Route - Trip A Distance - MPG – Location

Google Route 72.5 miles from Speedway in Gurnee, IL to Ryan Road in Oak Creek, WI and back to the Shell in Gurnee, IL just down the street from initial fill.

The Speedway’s CC system was out and it took over 20-minutes just to get in to top off so for the final, I stopped at a Shell about .5 miles down the street and slightly closer to home.

Final fill after 72.5 actual miles on 1.182 gallons = 61.33 mpgUS.

So what else was improved from 2012 to 2013? For those that have followed our previous Elantra reviews, the aFCD over report has been eliminated and the actual miles traveled is only 1.7% less than actual vs. the 3 to 3.1% we have seen in the past.

Top offs with the 2013 Elantra GT took only 4 top offs with violent shaking in between for both the initial and final top off. An extra five minutes is not bad at all.

From the first full measured tank when throwing the book at it (918 miles actual on 12.741 gal = 72.051 mpg) and this one using just basic and intermediate techniques, we have a final 990.5 actual miles on 13.923 gallons = 71.14 mpgUS.

For SG-2 calibration, if you are driving advanced, I had to input a – 5.3% offset for calibration. For basic and intermediate hypermiling techniques, you do not need to change the fuel offset but will need to change the speed/distance offset by 1.7%.
