Re: Ford’s 13 Fusion with Auto Stop-Start – An Affordable and Better Starting Solutio
No power steering or power brakes? I don't see your average American rushing out to buy that.

Re: Ford’s 13 Fusion with Auto Stop-Start – An Affordable and Better Starting Solutio
I'd much prefer to do without power steering and its drawbacks, as long as the vehicle isn't a heavy one. You're right about the average American, though.
Power brakes have a much better cost/benefit ratio. I used to drive an employer's Dodge van that was (barely) modern enough to have disk front brakes, but too early and too basic to have a vacuum power booster. You had to push hard to stop the thing! |
Re: Ford’s 13 Fusion with Auto Stop-Start – An Affordable and Better Starting Solutio
Yeah, unfortunately, our choices for vehicles are influenced by the idiots that bring the supersize coke from McDonald's into the dealer to make sure it fits the cupholders in the car. It could be the best choice for them logically, but if the damn cup don't fit, they won't buy the car. You need power steering so you can drive one handed while talking on your cell phone, sipping your tall latte, and eating your Big Mac.

Re: Ford’s 13 Fusion with Auto Stop-Start – An Affordable and Better Starting Solutio
A properly designed car doesn't need power steering or power brakes -- those systems should be able to work without additional energy input. Then they would be more efficient i.e. they would have better FE.
Or, the power should come from an electric motor that doesn't depend on the vacuum. |
Re: Ford’s 13 Fusion with Auto Stop-Start – An Affordable and Better Starting Solutio
My car usually doesn't have power steering. ;) It's just fine that way. The Ody is a real chore to drive without it. It really depends on how it's built whether it needs boost or not.

Re: Ford’s 13 Fusion with Auto Stop-Start – An Affordable and Better Starting Solutio
Yeah, I can drive a vehicle w/o power steering or brakes. I was once driving a 6 ton truck when the accelerator got stuck. I shifted to Neutral, cut the ignition, and was able to slow down and steer it into a parking lot w/o power assist. Granted, I would not want to drive that vehicle without power assist on a daily basis, but certainly if a 6 ton can be driven without power assist, something should be able to be done with smaller passenger vehicles.

Re: Ford’s 13 Fusion with Auto Stop-Start – An Affordable and Better Starting Solutio
Are you guys convinced that Ford's start-stop solution won't do some serious wear and tear to the AGM battery over time to the point that its ability to support start-stop will be compromised?

Re: Ford’s 13 Fusion with Auto Stop-Start – An Affordable and Better Starting Solutio
Hi Bryan:
Not at all. These AGMs will last just as long as any other 12V but will be a bit more expensive to replace as they are larger cap and AGM. What I am worried about however is they may use internal sensors to watch voltage, capacity and current inflow/outflow. If so, they could be very expensive to replace? As soon as the Fusion is released, somebody with the Start/Stop system will open their hood and have a good look. If there is a wiring harness going inside, somebody will walk over to their local Ford dealer and find out the replacement cost. Since this is a system similar to those in Europe, I doubt they are that much more expensive to replace or we would have heard about it by now. Wayne |

"DENSO Corporation has developed a Cold Storage (CS) Evaporator, which limits the increase in vehicle cabin temperature during an idle stop when stop/start technology is employed. The newly developed CS Evaporator is equipped with a cold insulator, located in the heat exchanging area, which stores cold energy to be used to cool in-vehicle cabin air while the engine and air-conditioning cycle is off in the idle-stop state." |
