All-New 2013 Toyota Avalon Features a Hybrid drivetrain for the first time!

When the all-new, 2013 Avalon arrives later this year, consumers can finally choose Toyota’s proven Hybrid Synergy Drive. The efficiency offered by the new hybrid model will help the all-new premium mid-size sedan achieve excellent fuel economy with an EPA-rating of 40 mpg combined. Think about that one more time. A large sedan with a 40 mpg combined rating...

In addition to offering a hybrid powertrain, the new Avalon features a a more modern design, improved handling, and a spacious comfortable interior.

An Avalon with HSD :)

The all-new Avalon features Toyota's full hybrid system and coupled with reductions in vehicle weight and improvements in aerodynamics, the Avalon Hybrid is expected to achieve a 40/39 mpgUS city/highway rating.

Using the same atkinsonized 2.5L from the Camry Hybrid/ES 300h mated to HSD, the Avalon Hybrid will arrive with the same seamless accelration as its forebearers.

The 2013 Avalon Hybrid offers an EV mode that allows the vehicle to operate solely on electric propulsion.

The ECO drive mode engages the gasoline motor, but reduces throttle response and HVAC output to help improve overall efficiency. The SPORT Mode takes full advantage of the new Avalon’s dynamic character, improved chassis, and enhanced suspension by altering the engine’s throttle response and enhancing steering feel.

The Avalon’s hybrid’s battery pack is comprised of 204 cells and is located in the vehicle trunk behind the rear seats, while still providing ample trunk space. The scroll casing for the battery cooling system’s blower fan has been designed to produce extremely quiet and efficient airflow, helping reduce interior noise and elevating refinement. The power-control unit, located in the engine bay, houses the inverter, DC-DC converter.

The hybrid vehicle transaxle also incorporates a flywheel-damper design that helps reduce noise and vibration during engine engagement.

Design

The new 2013 Avalon is the product of a North American-focused design and engineering effort from the Calty Design Research Inc. team in Southern California and Michigan.

The 2013 Avalon will be assembled at the award-winning Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky (TMMK) facility in Georgetown, Ky.

Interesting.

It'll be assembled in the same location as the Camry hybrid. They only sell 2,000 Avalons per month. With the large bump in mileage they could easily shift a lot of sales over to the hybrid.

What's the price premium?

They should do what Lincoln did. Sell the 6-cylinder and the 4-cyl hybrid for the SAME PRICE. Yes, I know it probably didn't work out so well for Lincoln, but they spent a century teaching fat Americans that bigger is better. Those customers now "think" they need a large 6-cylinder engine to get them around. Of course , if Toyota does this , it will priced high enough that it doesn't cannibalize sales from the Camry Hybrid. I'm guessing about $35K to start. I'm also guessing that the bread'n'butter Avalon will start at $32K.

I have no idea what the currrent Avalon sells for !

The 2012 Avalon starts at $33,195, so I'm guessing the hybrid will be at least $37 or $38K.

Re: 2013 Toyota Avalon Goes Hybrid!

why dont they slap in a 2.7 liter 4 banger in there and lower the price from the V6? I would much rather buy that than paying a huge premium for a hybrid version. Im sure there is a market for someone that wants a full size toyota sedan that saves gas and not too expensive.
