I think you will find that a UK £20,700 47 mpg(Imp) combined 1.6 Liter Ecoboost costs the same or a little more than a £20,045 67 mpg(Imp) combined 1.6 Liter turbo diesel at the same trim level, see

Thanks for those links, note the gasoline engine is producing 180hp and the diesel 115hp.. quite a bit of difference. The diesel probably will require additional emissions equipment in the US.

I would love to see Wayne spar with Clarkson as a guest on Top Gear. I also would love to see Wayne's "hot lap" in the economy car. He would get the slowest time ever, but at 50+ mpg's!:)

2 reasons: The last round of diesel passenger vehicles that Americans got were noisy, hard to start, underpowered, smelly beasts that belched black smoke and had a high failure rate because they were essentially gasoline motors that were converted to diesel. Because of this, there isn't much demand. Once you get past the demand hurdle, they have to do safety and EPA tests just to sell a relatively small number of cars with big rebates. There's just not enough profit in it here.

There should be some demand if gas keeps going up, but apparently this wont be the year of $5 a gallon gasoline.

No, the last time the USA was ready to buy diesels en masse did.

Of course, in 1985 there weren't any hybrids.

Next year, if not the "Year of the Diesel" may be the "Year of the Hmmmm Diesel".

No, but the memory of those 70's & 80's diesels is still fresh in the minds of many Americans.

"We need to get back to 1985" LOL

I don't think that's a fair statement. How many of the seven or so manufacturers of diesel car engines sold in the U.S. back circa 1980 made diesels with a high failure rate? Guilt by association never makes sense, although it's a common form of misleading propaganda.

The people I knew that had them in the 80's had nothing but problems with them. By the time I got my license, and was car shopping (late 80's) many of these cars were already on the used market with their original diesel engines replaced with gasoline engines. From what I understand, the gasoline engines converted to diesel could not withstand the stress of running as a high compression diesel for very long, and failed.
