Toyota Celebrates Earth Week

Toyota Canada employees, dealerships and even customers are bringing Earth Week activities to the forefront as I type.

The cute and very fuel efficient 2012 Prius c is a celebration of Earth Week all by itself. It as well as the entire Prius family lineup is available (or will soon be available once stocks are resupplied) at a Toyota dealership near you.

We already know Toyota as the leader in environmental sustainability thanks to the most affordable fuel efficient lineup available.

Celebrating those vehicles -- we are talking the Prius family in particular of course ;) -- is an important part of how Toyota Canada is commemorating Earth Week this year with an array of special initiatives to demonstrate how Toyota’s values and vision for the future are driven by doing what can be done to reduce our impact on our planet.

Stephen Beatty, Managing Director at Toyota Canada:
Quote:

“In a recent study of future Canadian new vehicle purchasers, almost half of those under the age of 25 would consider a hybrid as their next vehicle choice and that is encouraging.”
Each day this week, special activities are taking place, with the momentum sustained right through until next Monday (April 23).

Earth Week Highlights
  • Toyota Canada sponsored an exhibit at the Green Living Show last weekend to promote the environmental benefits of fresh, sustainable homegrown food; and held test drives that provided the first opportunity to drive the entire Prius Family.

  • The Metro newspaper is running a “Pick Your Prius” contest and display, in which one lucky winner will be able to win a Prius of their choice – up to a maximum of $28 865 plus tax. The contest began in Vancouver on April 12 and will end in Montreal on April 25. Just in time for Earth Week, a Pick Your Prius event and display will be at Toronto’s Yonge-Dundas Square April 19-21. To enter the contest, visit Metro News – Pick Your Prius.
Toyota employees
  • Toyota Canada employees are holding “Electronic Waste and Donation Days” on Wednesday (April 18) and Thursday (April 19) to help divert waste from landfill by recycling used electronics and donating working items.

  • On Friday (April 20), employees will be venturing into their local communities for a “clean-up day.”

  • On Sunday, Earth Day (April 22), Toyota will announce its annual Earth Day scholarship winners.

  • Also on Sunday, Toyota’s Pacific zone office in Richmond BC will be hosting a hybrid clinic, which will allow those interested in hybrid technology to get up close and personal with Toyota’s hybrid fleet by test driving and talking to hybrid experts.

  • At CAPTIN, a Toyota manufacturing plant for aluminum wheels, three large aluminum picnic tables are being donated to Earthwise Farm, a non-profit local environmental organization that cultivates sustainable communities through environmental education and stewardships. The tables will be used for a variety of activities at the farm.
Toyota Canada Dealerships
  • At Woodhaven Lexus Toyota in Winnipeg, all of the parking lot pole lights are being changed to more energy-efficient LED fixtures.

  • Cochrane Toyota in Alberta welcomes the return of a family of osprey birds, where a specially constructed nesting area was built. In addition, 1.2 acres of dealership property are being set aside for a wetland conservation project.

  • On April 18, the team at North Bay Toyota is donating saplings to local schools.

  • Upper James Toyota in Hamilton is having a sale on hybrids, encouraging clients to bring in a recyclable item to receive further discounts.

  • Stouffville Toyota in the Greater Toronto Area will celebrate its LEED Certification at an event on April 23.
Toyota Owners
  • Daily from Monday until Earth Day on Sunday, one compelling, personal story of a hybrid owner is being featured on Toyota’s Facebook page. To read these stories, follow Toyota Canada on Facebook.

  • Each day until Sunday, one environmentally-themed trivia question is being posed about Toyota vehicles on Twitter. The first five people to answer the question correctly win an eco-friendly water bottle. To enter the contest, follow Toyota Canada’s twitter feed at Toyota Canada.
All in, Toyota employees and customers should be proud of what the manufacturer has provided through their hybrid automobile offerings and if you can support your community though any of the above efforts, by all means do so at your earliest convenience.

The Prius oil filter is one thing I like: the housing is permanent, reused. Only an O-Ring and the actual paper filter is replaced. Up here Canadian Tire (for one) will take used motor oil, emptied oil bottles and oil filters for recycling. I would think recycling just the paper cartridge is much easier than a full cartridge with metal housing.

That's nice and all, but there's an elephant in the room. An elephant named Tundra. And a rhinoceros named Sequoia.

... much like oil filters of the early 1950's (and earlier?), before spin-on filters appeared in the late 50's.

Yeah, I recall those. Only problem, they ended up in a pile behind the gas station, lol. Heard a recycler being interviewed a year-or-two back: they now manage to shred, steam and centrifuge the residual oil out of empty bottles and filters.

Good point , Andrew. But Mighty 'Yota is just giving the peoples what they "needs".
And trying to make a giga-buck, like all good multi-nationals do. At the end of the day...

I love Toyota. Yes , I said it ! I do.

Actually, I think the metal housing is the only recyclable part of an oil filter. Wax paper isn't recycled because there's no easy way to remove the wax. I suspect the same is true for oiled paper.
