2012 Auto Show in the Big Apple
2012 International Auto Show comes to New York![]() The Big Apple turns its sights to automobile journalists and enthusiasts the world over! The 2012 New York International Auto Show has come to New York and CleanMPG will be there to provide detail on the latest and greatest that the world's auto manufacturers have to offer. And to get a sneak peak at what will be coming in the near future. According to New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) managers, the year was 1900 when the first North American Auto Exhibition occurred. And now over one hundred and ten years later, it continues its longstanding tradition of being a world class Auto Show for both a national and world stage. Given that metro New York is one of the nation's largest markets for new car and truck sales, the Show is said to be one of the most important automotive events in the world. In addition, over the last decade, the NYIAS has boosted the number of new vehicle announcements and increased media attention to new levels never before experienced in New York. While it may not be the most important Auto Show stage in the world, its stock is certainly rising as manufacturers the world over now see the NYIAS as another world renown venue to release their latest and greatest wares. The “Buzz” of which has a direct link to future sales and more importantly, the future bottom line. In addition to its place as one of the world's greatest public shows, NYIAS has expanded with new industry forums, award ceremonies; more than two dozen auto manufacturer press conferences and pre and post Press Event day(s) parties. The NYIAS like the major shows in LA, Detroit and Chicago preceding the Auto Show season offers virtually every make and model of vehicle sold in the U.S. under one roof providing media and consumers alike a unique opportunity to see everything the auto industry has to offer. From the most efficient BEVs to million dollar exotics, the NYIAS has something for everyone. From what we have seen so far, the 2012 NYIAS does that and more with each new auto manufacturer and supplier venue visited. Stay tuned for coverage throughout the day. |
Re: 2012 Auto Show in the Big Apple
First conference of the day - Chevrolet.
The big news this year - the 2014 Impala. While the 2012 Impala is an evolution of the 25 year old GM10 platform, also known as the "W" body, the new 2014 Impala will be virtually all new, except for the little shiny chrome impala trapped eternally within the elliptical badge. Some highlights from the presentation - - The Impala nameplate has been part of Chevrolet's heritage since 1958. - In 1965, over 1 million Impalas were sold during the model year. ...It seems they are cashing the "nameplate recognition" check, relying on memories of iconic sedans and coupes to sell the new generation. Alongside the new Impala, they displayed a 1965 hardtop coupe and a 1966 convertible. - The new 2014 Impala will share the long-wheelbase Epsilon II platform with the Buick Lacrosse and the Cadillac Sedan De Ville (or XLV or CDS or MCMLXXVII or whatever Roman numeral badge they're sticking on it). - Powerplants for the new Impala. First mentioned is a 303hp 3.6L V6. Ooohh. 300+hp. At $4/gal, this one is gonna hurt. Next mentioned is the new 2.5L four cylinder - the next generation of Ecotec, coming soon to the Malibu as well - with a promised 30mpg highway or more. Let's hope for more. And finally, the 2.4L four cylinder and eAssist powertrain will find its way into the Impala. This was a given, considering the Lacrosse shares the platform and is built on the same assembly line. The eAssist Impala is said to get 35mpg highway "or more". Also featured on stage was the 2013 Traverse. With a mid-cycle refresh, it gets a new front end, new tail lights, the new Chevrolet MyLink audio system, and the front center airbag that we read about late last year. The Spark - coming this summer - didn't have any presence on the stage. It was within a lucite frame in the rear of the Chevrolet exhibit, looking like a sad puppy that's locked in a cage because it's not housebroken. I thought that the diminutive CAFE-average booster would have at least gotten a mention? |
Re: 2012 Auto Show in the Big Apple
Hi All:
Thanks Chris! While twitter has been lit up for the past two days regarding the all-new Impala, I look at it and I see nothing. It has a new design, the weight has been moved back (ala BMW) for better handling and its large but the big HP V6 and even the 2.5L EcoTec is going to barely touch 30 mpg highway so what is the point? eAssist will help here too... Here is GM's Presentation speech from this morning: Quote:
And of course the Altima and Santa Fe will be revealed in < 2-hours so we'll keep you informed... Wayne |

Re: 2012 Auto Show in the Big Apple
Hi All:
The All-New 2014 Chevrolet Impala Introducing the all-new 2014 Impala. The redesigned Chevrolet flagship sedan builds on a strong heritage yet provides a new style, more-refined interior and easy-to-use technology. The all-new Impala goes on sale in early 2013 as the 10th generation of one of the industry’s most enduring nameplates. Impala was America’s best-selling full-size sedan in 2011, with sales of more than 171,000, which also made it one of the 10 best-selling cars overall in the United States, along with Chevrolet Malibu and Cruze. Designed on an award-winning global platform, the 2014 Impala introduces new levels of comfort, refinement and technology. Highlights include:
![]() The Impala’s long, low proportion has a wind-swept profile that suggests motion, while the range of 18-, 19- and 20-inch wheels is tailored to the body to provide that “just right” stance. At the front, low-profile projector-beam headlamps – or HID headlamps and LED daytime running lamps on LTZ – sweep around the corners and frame a wide grille, while a power dome hood conveys performance. The LTZ’s LED daytime running lamps provide a contemporary visual statement, along with function. The 2014 Impala builds on Chevrolet’s signature dual-cockpit interior with greater attention to detail and upscale features – seen in everything from the wraparound flow of the instrument panel into the door panels and the available ambient lighting, to the soft feel of the materials and the premium appearance of the seats’ stitching. The instrument panel integrates a new instrument cluster with a standard 4.2-inch color display with reconfigurable features for the driver information center. The eight-inch touch screen with concealed storage behind it is matched with the available Chevrolet MyLink system. Refinement The 2014 Impala’s comfort and refinement are rooted in a stronger body structure, designed to foster a quieter passenger environment and a greater overall feeling of quality. The stiffer architecture also enabled engineers to tune the ride and handling more precisely, for a greater feeling of control and comfort. A comprehensive package of sound-absorbing, sound-suppressing and even active noise cancellation (on four-cylinder models) contributes to the 2014 Impala being Chevrolet’s quietest full-size sedan ever. Premium materials throughout the interior and details such as high-quality fabric, Ultrasuede and perforated leather appointments, complement the quiet environment and give the Impala a substantive look and feel. The seats are bolstered for greater support, and the seat cushions are designed to deliver a firm, premium feel that is just as comfortable on a 500-mile drive as on a five-minute excursion. The rear-seat head restraints fold to improve rear visibility when driving without rear passengers. Safety The 2014 Impala offers a comprehensive suite of standard and available safety features. It employs advanced technologies – including radar – to help avoid crashes. Visual and audible alerts help drivers identify potential crash situations and even intervene when a crash threat appears more imminent. The available safety features and benefits include firsts for Chevrolet and Impala:
Drivetrains Impala’s three powertrains all feature fuel-saving direct injection and lightweight components.
The powertrains are the force behind Impala’s responsive driving experience, which is tuned for a spirited, yet comfortable performance. A MacPherson-strut front suspension and four-link rear suspension underpin the Impala, with an isolated front cradle and hydraulic ride bushing that help deliver a smoother, quieter ride. All models feature an electric variable-assist steering system that helps save fuel by drawing energy only when the steering wheel is turned. The 2014 Impala will be offered in LS, LT and LTZ models, with assembly at GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck, Mich., and Oshawa, Ontario facilities. Pricing will be announced later. And where the 2014 Impala hits pay dirt. It has a trunk with a cargo cap of 18.8 cu. ft.! The interior at 105 cu.ft. is about the size of a Sonata. Wayne |

Re: 2012 Auto Show in the Big Apple
Hi All:
Meet the 2013 Viper(s) ;) ![]() 2013 SRT® Viper – The Return of the Snake Street and Racing Technology (SRT) brand’s flagship performance machine returns with more power and performance, superior craftsmanship, new technologies and creature comforts. Two new models include SRT Viper and SRT Viper GTS All-aluminum, mid-engine 8.4-liter V-10 delivers an estimated 640 horsepower and 600 lb.-ft. of torque – the most torque of any naturally aspirated sports car engine in the world. Chassis enhancements bring 50 percent improvement in torsional stiffness. Triple-digit weight reduction results in Viper best power-to-weight ratio. Standard safety features include electronic multistage stability control, traction control and new 4-channel anti-lock brake system (ABS). All-new, innovative interior designs set new standards with premium materials, new technologies and superior craftsmanship. All-new carbon-fiber and aluminum skin is sculpted for high-speed stability and a slippery .364 drag coefficient (Cd). Timeless exterior design incorporates iconic Viper styling cues with a contemporary execution. The all-new 2013 SRT Viper was unveiled to the world today at the New York International Auto Show, marking its highly anticipated return to the high-performance sports car market. The fifth generation of the iconic two-seat, American-built supercar has been deliberately evolved to incorporate superior craftsmanship, a host of new technologies and ergonomic improvements while respecting its visceral legacy of outright performance. “After a gut-wrenching period of uncertainty, the Street and Racing Technology brand team is extremely proud that our hand-built in Detroit, flagship supercar is back and ready to take on the performance car world,” said Ralph Gilles, President and CEO – Street and Racing Technology Brand and Motorsports, Chrysler Group LLC. “Beyond being the flagship for the new SRT brand, the launch of the 2013 Viper proves that we simply would not let the performance icon of the Chrysler Group die. Willed to live on by a very special group of performance enthusiasts inside the company and across Viper Nation, this SRT team under our new leadership was challenged to not just continue the legendary Viper, but to create a world-class supercar that would showcase the very best we have to offer.” Two new models for any performance buyer For the 2013 model year, two new models of the iconic supercar will be hand built at the Conner Avenue Assembly Plant in Detroit – the home for Viper since 1995. Both SRT Viper and SRT Viper GTS models offer new interior and exterior designs incorporating premium materials and new exterior surfaces with aerodynamically functional details that are beautifully integrated into the high-tech carbon fiber and aluminum skin. On the inside, designers and engineers strived to rethink all touch points; and upgrade all material appointments and technologies. “The SRT Viper model is meant to offer a perfect blend of extreme performance and a deliberate preservation of what has become the iconic DNA of the Viper,” Gilles added. “We strove to deliver a supercar that continues to bring the driver as close as possible to the machine.” The SRT Viper GTS builds on the DNA of the SRT Viper model with more technologically advanced solutions, like two-mode active suspension, to allow this world-class GTS to find new limits on the track while also opening up its envelope as a more premium and mature evolution of the classic, extreme performance formula. Designed and built with premium features and materials inside and out, the Viper GTS will compete with the best performance vehicles in the world with a wide range of creature comforts, advanced drivetrain and interior technologies. “We’ve purposely evolved the iconic soul and raw performance formula that Viper has maintained over the years,” Gilles said. “Our returning customers will see the world-class levels of pride, quality and hand craftsmanship built into the 2013 Viper. With two price classes of the SRT Viper and SRT Viper GTS, we have offerings for both the traditional core Viper customer and for the new customer who wants the same performance in a package with more technology and premium creature comforts.” Awe-inspiring V-10 powertrain At the heart and soul of the 2013 SRT Viper is the venerable, hand-assembled 8.4-liter all-aluminum, V-10 overhead-valve engine. Improvements for 2013 include a new, ultra-high flow and lightweight composite intake manifold, high-strength forged pistons, sodium-filled exhaust valves, new catalysts to reduce back pressure and an aluminum flywheel that reduces reciprocating losses. More than 25 pounds has been shaved from the fully dressed engine. Preliminary performance ratings for the SRT-engineered V-10 Viper are 640 horsepower and 600 lb.-ft. of torque – the most torque of any naturally aspirated engine in the world. The Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual transmission has been improved with a shorter throw shifter, closer gear ratios and a final drive ratio that has been shortened to 3.55 from 3.07. The 2013 Viper models will be more engaging to drive and top speed is now achieved through 6th gear with maximum engine speed (redline) at 6,200 rpm. Outstanding ride, handling and capability Starting with a stiffer structure that provides 50 percent more torsional rigidity, the chassis of the 2013 SRT Viper benefits from numerous enhancements – many learned through racing efforts with Viper GTS-R and Competition Coupe models. Major updates include the addition of a new aluminum “X” brace under the hood that ties the suspension pickup points to the magnesium cowl super casting and contributes to improved torsional rigidity and stiffness. A new aluminum impact beam at the front of the car contributes to overall mass savings and improved weight distribution while providing excellent crashworthiness. Structurally, many areas of the chassis were reworked to take advantage of new materials, reduce thickness in some areas and reshape components for more structural rigidity in others. The result is an overall weight savings of approximately 100 pounds. At the rear, the suspension has been re-engineered with the toe link moved forward of the axle for better tow control and dynamic stability. A new, driver selectable two-mode suspension system, featuring Bilstein DampTronic Select shock absorbers with both street and track settings, is standard on GTS models. For 2013, SRT Viper models ride on standard Pirelli P Zero, Z-rated tires with substantially improved overall performance, cold weather performance, enhanced overall grip and steering response on a variety of road surfaces while also broadening the performance envelope. An optional SRT Track Package features Pirelli P Zero Corsa, “soft”-tuned, "racing-type" compound tires that improve handling and precision further on the road or the race track. For the first time, standard safety technologies such as electronic stability control and traction control help to maximize traction performance at virtually any speed and driving environment. All 2013 Viper models will come with a steering-wheel-mounted launch control switch, allowing for optimal acceleration from standing starts. Benchmark braking Stopping performance for the 2013 SRT Viper is engineered to provide shorter stopping distances, better modulation, improved durability and balanced brake performance without fading under extreme conditions. Four-piston Brembo brakes with fixed-aluminum calipers, and vented rotors with a diameter of 355 mm by 32 mm, are used at all four corners. Brake calipers are forged and weight optimized by fully machining all surfaces. The calipers are among the stiffest available with distortion from heat nearly eliminated even under the most demanding braking conditions. The available SRT Track Package features lightweight and slotted two-piece rotors from StopTech. New premium materials, craftsmanship and technologies The all-new, driver-oriented interior cabins of the SRT Viper models have been totally revamped for 2013 with superior craftsmanship, premium material appointments and performance-oriented technologies. For the first time, all major interior surfaces are sewn and wrapped with additional padding applied in comfort areas. On the Viper GTS model, all surfaces are fully leather skinned, and standard accent colors are applied to the seats, doors, center console and stitching. Quality fit and finish across the lineup is showcased by triple-paint-finished Gun Metal appliqués on the cluster bezel, HVAC outlets, window switch bezels, shifter base, park brake bezel and the integrated passenger grab handle on the center console. Standard high-performance racing seats from Sabelt feature a lightweight Kevlar/fiberglass shell created by a state-of-the-art resin transfer molding technology for mass reduction and long-term durability. Both driver and passenger enjoy improved comfort from thigh support and deep side bolsters designed to match the extreme lateral acceleration capabilities of the SRT Viper. Seating position in the 2013 SRT Viper models is 20 mm lower for more room and enhanced performance-driving ergonomics. Seat travel is extended by 90 mm overall, which enables expanded seating options from a more rearward positioned bulkhead. For the first time, seat height can be adjusted by up to 40 mm – manually on the SRT model and power controlled on the GTS. The new 2013 Viper is the most spacious model in the history of the nameplate. The floor pan and bulkhead have been extended approximately 90 mm to provide improved legroom and more rearward seat track movement. Designed specifically for the 2013 SRT Viper, the new 7-inch, full-color, customizable instrument cluster display uses a full-time analog tachometer readout in the center to confirm the performance driving feedback philosophy of the Viper. Drivers have a wide range of custom and personal options such as an additional digital speedometer readout just below the tachometer. The vehicle information is clearly communicated with easy-to-understand icons. Intuitively controlled through a simple four-way steering-wheel control, the driver can configure the screens to display the information they desire, easily mixing and matching information. Uconnect® Access provides new level of connectivity The 2013 SRT Viper lineup includes the new, next generation Uconnect® Access in-vehicle connectivity system that provides drivers with access to more information, emergency services, more entertainment and improved graphics. Viper customers can choose between two Uconnect Media Centers, RA3 and RA4, which provide a range of new features and multiple ways to control media in the vehicle. The system includes an 8.4-inch touchscreen along with a set of hard keys for commonly used functions, including traditional knobs for tuning the radio bands and radio volume. Touchscreen buttons along the bottom of the screen allow drivers to easily access the radio, climate controls, navigation, phone, and new, select, certified applications. The new, highly sculpted steering wheel has a host of finger-tip mounted controls for audio, Uconnect, cruise control (first application) and launch control. SiriusXM Travel Link also is available with Uconnect, providing premium data services and information to make every trip more efficient. SiriusXM Traffic works with the vehicle’s navigation system to display traffic speed and traffic flow information along with accident information to assist drivers in routing around congested areas. An expanded SiriusXM channel lineup includes exclusive programming, including the new SiriusXM Latino channels, an auto industry first. A range of Harman Kardon® surround-sound systems are available across the SRT Viper lineup that feature the latest in audio system technology. All Harman Kardon audio systems include a high-voltage class D amplifier with tracking power supply and up to 11 channels of amplification. The Harman Kardon system with exclusive Logic 7 surround-sound processing is available in the Viper GTS model with a total of 18-speakers, including four subwoofers located behind the seats. All Harman Kardon systems in the 2013 SRT Viper lineup include high-performance, high-efficiency GreenEdge technology loudspeakers that are extremely light and include rare earth magnets. The magnets inside each speaker ensure efficient speaker operation and enhanced performance. The audio systems operate on 32 volts – so the new and improved sound system achieves more than double the acoustic power of the current system. Refined evolution of SRT’s hallmark – aggressive and functional exterior designs The all-new, timeless exterior design blends contemporary execution with evolutionary refinement. All-new carbon-fiber hood, roof, decklid and aluminum door panels are firsts for SRT Viper models resulting in significant weight reduction, improved high-speed stability and a slippery .364 drag coefficient. The forward-hinged hood carries the redesigned Viper badge – aptly named “Stryker” by the Viper Club of America – positioned in the center; and offers unobtrusive access to several service points and the SRT-engineered V-10 powerplant. The classical low-stance and the extreme cab rearward proportions that have become the unmistakable silhouette of the iconic supercar, return on the 2013 SRT Viper models along with the dramatic fender “gills” – another traditional Viper design cue that helps to extract heat from the engine compartment. The 2013 Viper models feature a contemporary take on the traditional “double-bubble” roof configuration that maximizes headroom for the driver and passenger while maintaining a low frontal area – allowing additional room for helmets during recreational competitive driving. Dual-function, bi-xenon projector headlamps are tightly packaged with white light-emitting diode (LED) daytime running lamps and LED turn signals in a sinister “snake eye” configuration. Functional “blisters” incorporated into the 70 mm projector headlamp lenses create a three-dimensional view that gives Viper a distinctive glare. The lower-front grille is purposefully designed as an evolution of the traditional Viper low-profile cooling opening configuration and discretely carries a refined V-shape structure. The exhaust system continues to exit forward of the rear wheels and now carries further refinement with cast aluminum, sill-mounted exhaust bezels. For the first time, the 2013 SRT Viper models carry LED taillamps that integrate stop-and-turn illumination in one element. Snakeskin texture in the lens carries the surface work seen in the gills and hood textures. With dark-masked lenses, the horizontal lamps appear dark until the LED elements fire. Each lamp carries 50 LEDs that provide a unified “crystallized” illumination effect. The five-spoke, forged-aluminum “Rattler” wheel design on the 2013 Viper model is available with fully polished (standard), fully painted Hyper Black or fully painted low-gloss black finishes. The Viper GTS has a split six-spoke forged-aluminum “Venom” wheel design with three available finishes, including polished face with graphite-painted pockets (standard), fully painted Hyper Black or fully painted low-gloss black. Available SRT Track Package wheels are ultra-lightweight, track-ready wheels in Hyper Black or matte black finishes. Right out of Chrysler’s PR Press mill… Wayne |

All-New 2013 Nissan Altima Tops Mid-Size Sedan Class in Style, Fuel Economy, Performance and Innovation
Segment Defining Innovations, Wrapped in "Class Above" Exterior and Interior Design, Create a Customer Experience That's Unmatched in Segment 2013 Altima Sedan Overview Two decades after the original Nissan Altima revolutionized the traditional mid-size sedan segment in North America, Nissan’s best-selling vehicle is about to shake up the category all over again. Making its world debut at the New York International Auto Show, the 2013 Nissan Altima is once again poised to become the new benchmark in the hotly contested segment when it goes on sale at Nissan retailers nationwide this summer. ![]() The new Altima offers numerous segment defining attributes that enhance the ownership experience and provide real customer value, including:
The 2013 Altima is one of five all-new Nissan models set for introduction in the next 15 months and, as the second best-selling car in the United States in 2011, much is riding on the new fifth generation Altima. The result is a vehicle that builds on the strong fundamental reputation, earned over four generations and two decades, for quality and reliability and adds new levels of innovation, fuel-efficiency, dynamic performance and premium style. A Premium Presence Among the new Altima’s many new features, perhaps the one that stands out most is its “class above” appeal, which is apparent at first look and first touch of both the exterior and interior executions. “Mid-size sedan buyers are traditionally motivated first and foremost by the rational aspects of the purchase decision – excellent value, reliability and comfort, which Altima shares with a number of other nameplates. But Altima buyers have never been satisfied with owning just another boring mid-size sedan,” said Carolin. “The new Altima meets all of the rational purchase reasons, but delivers them in a way that is also emotionally rewarding. And it does so through both its dynamic appearance and dynamic driving performance.” The 2013 Altima’s all-new exterior design starts with its wide, aggressive stance and dramatic front end styling. Though retaining the same wheelbase as the previous generation Altima, it has a wider front and rear track (+1.4 inches) and deeper fenders (+0.8 inches each side) – which combine with a crisp new grille design, seamless bumper and projector-type headlights to create a bold, sophisticated appearance. Altima’s new “premium proportions” continue with the longer sloping rear roofline and raised trunk that combine to create a more fluid silhouette. The A-pillar angle is now slightly more sloped, and the drip rail has been lowered and the waistline raised. In addition, the deep-stamped trunk has been raised and expanded. The new body design is capped by large taillights (with LED taillights standard on SL models) that flow from the rear into the bodysides. Chrome trim and door handles accent the available palette of eight rich exterior colors. Attention to aerodynamic fine-tuning gives the new Altima a lower coefficient of drag. The new Altima’s interior defies mid-size sedan convention, rivaling upscale luxury sedans in ambience and sophistication. Like the exterior, there is a premium look and feel – from the driver’s side cockpit to the front passenger and rear seating areas – with extensive use of upscale, soft-touch materials and craftsman-like attention to detail. ![]() NASA-Inspired “Zero-Gravity” Seats, Quiet Cabin In the desire to help reduce the fatigue experienced during long commutes or extended road trips, Nissan turned to seating and posture research from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). According to NASA, the least fatiguing seats are those that come closest to a “neutral posture” – a relaxed position that the human body takes in a weightless environment. Utilizing a new articulated seat shape with continuous support from the pelvis to the chest and distribution of localized deformation characteristics, the “zero-gravity” Altima seats help reduce muscular and spinal loads, and improve blood flow – thereby helping reduce fatigue over long periods behind the wheel. Seat surface perforations provide increased ventilation, breathability and comfort. Heated front seats are also available. Along with premium seat comfort, the new Altima offers premium quietness through efforts to reduce cabin noise coming from the powertrain (new engine and exhaust mount designs), climate system (increased HVAC mounting rigidity) and the body (increased body rigidity) versus the previous Altima design. New noise absorption materials with a 30 percent increase in absorption capability (versus previous Altima) are also used throughout the cabin, including areas such as the roof trim, instrument panel and floor mats. The 2013 Altima offers standard cloth seating with a 6-way driver’s seat and a 4-way adjustable front passenger seat, 60/40 split folding rear bench seat with armrest, and Piano Black interior trim with chrome finish accents. Also available, depending on model, are leather-appointed seats and trim, 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with power lumbar support, and metallic texture (Charcoal interior) or wood tone (Blond interior) trim finishers. Available audio systems include an AM/FM/CD design with RDS, MP3, aux-in and six speakers, along with a BOSE Premium Audio System with nine speakers (including woofers), designed in conjunction with BOSE engineers during vehicle development to deliver rich sound and acoustics. The new Altima is available with SiriusXM™ Satellite Radio (SiriusXM subscription required, sold separately), and Pandora radio capability (requires capable smartphone). New NissanConnect and NissanConnect with Navigation Along with the new seat design, two other items that set the 2013 Altima apart are its new NissanConnect and Advanced Drive-Assist Display (ADAD). The 2013 Altima is the first Nissan vehicle to offer NissanConnect, which offers Bluetooth® Hands-free Phone System and Streaming Audio via Bluetooth, along with available integrated Hands-Free Messaging Assistant, Pandora integration, USB connection for iPod interface and other compatible devices and SiriusXM Satellite Radio (SiriusXM™ subscription required, sold separately). It includes a 5.0-inch color audio display with SV and SL models. With the available Hands-Free Text Messaging Assistant (part of NissanConnect), drivers can manage incoming text messages via voice control without taking their hands from the wheel or eyes off the road. Drivers are alerted to an incoming text and, after initiating the system, can hear the text read out loud and respond via voice recognition, or via the steering wheel switches using pre-set answers such as “driving, can’t text,” “on my way,” “running late,” “okay” or a custom message. The NissanConnect with Navigation system is similarly packed with a rich range of features and is incredibly easy to use with its 7.0-inch touch-screen, 3D-effect map views, Voice Recognition, and turn-by-turn navigation integrated into the Advanced Drive-Assist™ Display. With the ability to search destinations via Google®, POI data will never be out of date. Other new next-generation navigation features include speed limit display, eco driving maps, curve warning, and split-screen display. Advanced Drive-Assist Display The new Advanced Drive-Assist™ Display comes standard on every model and is customizable, easy-to-use and integrates key information right in front of the driver. Located in the center of the instrument display between the tachometer and speedometer, it features a 4.0-inch color display, more than 400 percent larger than the previous generation Altima’s vehicle information display. Utilizing more natural 3D-effect graphics, it helps the driver to keep his or her eyes on the road longer than a traditional center-stack information monitor. The system is customizable and adjustable using the steering wheel controls, so drivers can view the information that is most important to them, including:
Three screens are always available (CarView, Vehicle Settings and Active Vehicle Warnings) and the driver can also select four other active screens among seven other available screens. On vehicles equipped with NissanConnectSM or NissanConnectSM with Navigation, the Advanced Drive-Assist™ display shows navigation destination turn-by-turn information, Pandora® song information and more. Safety Shield Technologies In addition to its many other functions, the Advanced Drive-Assist™ Display can be linked to three new available safety features – Blind Spot Warning (BSW), Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Moving Object Detection (MOD) – typically offered only on more upscale vehicles. It is the first time that LDW and MOD will be offered in the segment. The three systems are part of the optional Technology Package, which also includes the NissanConnect with Navigation with 7.0-inch color touch-screen and steering wheel navigation system controls. Thanks to the use of the systems’ advanced, next-generation rearview camera, the BSW, LDW and MOD are integrated, intuitive and affordable. The Blind Spot Warning System uses the rearview camera to scan the Altima’s blind spots and alerts the driver if there is a vehicle in the zone. The driver is then alerted with audible and visual indicators. In the same way, the Lane Departure Warning system uses the rearview camera to monitor lane markings and alerts the driver if the vehicle unintentionally crosses these markers. Moving Object Detection detects moving objects, such as other vehicles, when the rearview camera is engaged when backing up and warns the driver with visual cues. Smart, Dynamic Performance One key to achieving this modern one-two punch is found not in the drivetrain, but surrounding it – the new body design is about 80 pounds lighter than the previous body, which was already one of the lightest in the class. The new lighter and tighter body is achieved through increased use of high strength and ultra high strength steel, the addition of a larger front tower strut brace (as used in sports cars like the Nissan 370Z), and a new rear structural support built into the rear pass-through/parcel shelf. As for the engines, a choice of two proven Altima powerplants – the 2.L DOHC 4-cylinder and 3.5-liter DOHC V6 – are again offered for the new model year. The 2.5-liter QR25 engine has been redesigned to be lighter and more efficient. It now includes variable valve timing on both exhaust and intake camshafts, and the new intake system opens the valves at a higher rpm to help keep the torque curve flat. Featuring cutting-edge technology such as a new thermoplastic resin intake manifold, this engine simultaneously produced more power despite being lighter. Horsepower has increased by seven to an estimated 182 hp (from 175 hp), while torque remains the same at 180 lb-ft (est.). The advanced, award-winning VQ35DE 3.5-liter V6 remains rated at 270 horsepower (est.) and 258 lb-ft of torque (est.). Targeted Class-Leading Highway Fuel Economy Helping increase fuel economy with both engines is the next-generation Xtronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission). Nissan is an industry leader in CVT transmissions, with more than 20 years of experience in CVT design and engineering. For this next-generation design, a full 70 percent of the parts have been redesigned and internal friction reduced by up to 40 percent (versus the previous design). It also features new control logic and expanded gear ratio coverage, which helps reduce noise and fuel consumption while improving drivability and responsiveness. Targeted fuel economy for the Altima 2.5-liter 4-cylinder/CVT combination is 27 mpg city, 38 mpg highway and 31 mpg combined. Fuel economy for the 3.5-liter V6/CVT Altima is rated at 22 mpg city, 30 mpg highway and 25 mpg combined. Also contributing to the improved fuel efficiency are tires with reduced rolling resistance and a new regenerative alternator that only operates when the vehicle is coasting. Dynamic Driving Performance Building on Altima’s reputation for superior dynamic performance, the 2013 Altima offers a redefined multi-link rear suspension benchmarked to leading European sports sedans. The design features high lateral suspension stiffness, improved toe angle control (with the addition of new connect bushings) and improved camber angle control under load (for increased tire contact with the road when cornering) versus the previous generation Altima. The suspension also utilizes a new shock absorber design by ZF SACHS, similar to that used on high-end luxury sedans, to deliver stellar body control and response, while simultaneously delivering a plush, comfortable ride. The 2013 Altima’s front suspension uses an independent front strut design. Stabilizer bars are utilized front and rear. Also used for the first time on a Nissan vehicle and in the segment is a new Active Understeer Control system, which utilizes intelligent control logic and high-response brake actuators to brake the inside front wheels during cornering (as required) to increase yaw-moment. Using the Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC)/Traction Control System (TCS) as its base, Active Understeer Control is almost undetectable when it operates. It is designed primarily for everyday operation rather than emergency evasive maneuvers. Responsive steering is provided by a new Electronic Hydraulic Power-Assisted Steering (EHPS) system that preserves the feel of hydraulic steering rack while offering the efficiencies of an electric power steering set-up. Altima’s 4-wheel power-assisted disc brake system was also re-engineered utilizing human ergonomic studies to optimize pedal travel and force, providing a premium blend of immediate response, confident braking and reduced fatigue. Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) are standard. A selection of wheels and tires are offered on the 2013 Altima, including 16-inch steel wheels with full covers and 215/60R16 all-season tires, or 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with 215/55R17 V-rated all-season tires, on 2.5-liter models. New 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with 235/45R18 V-rated all-season tires are standard on 3.5-liter V6-equipped models. Details That Make a Difference The team behind the development of the new fifth generation Altima didn’t stop with the major components and systems – they also made numerous, almost imperceptible enhancements to nearly every aspect of the driving experience. The headlights’ automatic-on function, for example, offers an improved two-stage function. In lower light situations during the day, the headlights illuminate automatically – but the gauges remain in daylight mode. In late evening/night conditions, the headlights remain illuminated and the gauges revert to nighttime lighting. In addition, many states now require the headlights to be illuminated in rainy conditions. In the all-new Altima, after four passes of the windshield wipers, the headlights turn on automatically. If the vehicle is turned off with the wipers in motion, instead of stopping mid-motion, they automatically complete a full cycle – so they don’t get frozen to the windshield in icy or snowy conditions. The team even paid extra attention to the armrests, equipping them with deep, plush padding in order to enhance comfort mile after mile. The new Altima features the Easy Fill Tire Alert function, first introduced on the Nissan Quest, for the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). When filling the tires with air, the hazard lamps flash to let the operator know the system is working. When the correct pressure is reached, a beep of the horn provides notification. Unlike many competitive vehicles, Altima’s individual tire pressure monitoring and readout system provides the tire pressure at each individual location and automatically adjusts positions when the tires are rotated during service. The information is integrated into the Advanced Drive-Assist Display, Available from the SV grade is a factory-installed Remote Engine Start System, which allows the owner to heat or cool the vehicle from the comfort of the home. The Altima must be locked for the remote start to operate (up to 10 minutes). The Altima’s remote start is the first offered with a Nissan vehicle. The 2013 Altima offers a long list of standard safety features, including Nissan Advanced Air Bag System (AABS) with dual stage supplemental front air bags with seat belt sensors and an occupant classification sensor, front seat-mounted side impact supplemental air bags, and roof-mounted curtain supplemental side-impact air bags for front-and rear-seat occupant head protection. Seven Well-Equipped Models The all-new 2013 Nissan Altima is offered in four 2.5-liter engine equipped models, 2.5, 2.5 S, 2.5 SV and 2.5 SL, along with three 3.5-liter V6 equipped models, 3.5 S, 3.5 SV and 3.5 SL.
