Dan was asked to speak at the first Live Green Expo in Plano, Texas and travelled 250 miles from Houston to do so. It was well worth the trip.
His first talk was on hybrids - the benefits, and dispelling misconceptions.
The second talk was on hypermiling. Dan differentiated it from eco-driving. The audience was very interested as Dan displayed a ScanGage II and explained what it could do. Dan also touched into the need to avoid speeding, but many in the audience were turned off.

Well, there might be a way to reach them...
Dan found the entire experience educational. As he has progressed in his Hypermiling quest, he has taken some early hard won lessons as obvious and plainly seen
. To step back and try to present this stuff from scratch, really helps to refresh the full set of tools and techniques. Plus, the more people that absorb this stuff, the fewer people we'll have wizzing by us at 20mph over the posted speed.
Dan realized that there is a wealth of information that is dispensed in groups and forums that is not widely known. These types of events serve as a great way to get some of the general public up to spead on fact and fiction. After Tony spoke a few minutes, he turned it over to Dan.
Clearly, half of our oil is for cars (see arrow)
Where the oil comes from...
US imports: 27.3% in 1985 - 59.8% in 2005 - any questions?
Guess who consumes 25% of the world's oil?
A mention of CleanMPG
Dan and I tried to spread the wealth at every chance we got. Turned out to be a great place to find interested drivers.
I took over the presentation about halfway through and tried to focus on the basic myths that seem to prevail among the anti-hybrid media.
Andrew Grant of Vancover, British Columbia drove his 2001 Prius over 200,000 miles (332,000km) -
Toyota was impressed enough to give him a 2004 Prius and examine his old taxi. Bad batteries, eh?
An illustration of how the HSD works in Toyota and Ford hybrids
Illustrating how loading bikes, etc. is very doable in a Prius
Another common myth propagated is that hybrids are small and insufficently powered.
With models like the Ford Escape, Highlander, Camry, Civic and Prius, there is plenty of room to go around.
Dan's Factoid on Hybrid Myths
This is NOT Al Gore's chart illustrating the "hockey stick" increase of Global Warming. Instead, this is the increase in hybrid sales annually. (from 9,360 in 2000 to 251,803 in 2006)
Inconvent truth: Dallas/Fort Worth is the 8th worst polluted metro area in the US. Houston was worst, but down to #6.
