- Political Notes — Bartlett: No amnesty for illegal immigrants
Rep. Roscoe Bartlett, R-6th, is putting himself at odds with President Bush's immigration proposal. Mr. Bartlett said this week he will oppose any immigration bill that provides amnesty for illegal immigrants.
"Our national immigration policy is one of the most important issues in America, and we need an aggressive and effective policy," he said in a recent statement. "I don't care what it's called. I don't care who supports it. I care what it does."
Mr. Bush's plan includes a guest worker program. That's the equivalent of amnesty, Mr. Bartlett said.
America's borders are being actively compromised, its sovereignty challenged, and national security is at risk, Mr. Bartlett said. In the statement, he outlined his priorities for fixing the immigration system:
Secure the borders. That includes an "effective barrier" along the U.S.-Mexico border and troops on the border (something the congressman has voted for).
Ensuring that illegal means illegal. "Illegal aliens are criminals," Mr. Bartlett said.
Enforce existing laws against illegal immigration.
Prosecuting those who facilitate illegal immigration "to the fullest extent of the law."
Establish English as the official language of the U.S.
n Enforce the Real ID Act, a federal law that establishes standards of proof of citizenship or legal residence for federal acceptance of any state of local government-issued form of identification cards.
According to the Pew Hispanic Center, about 3.6 percent of the U.S. population are undocumented immigrants (an estimated 11.5 million to 12 million people). More than half of these illegal immigrants have come from Mexico. As of Pew's March 2005 estimates, Maryland had as many as 275,000 undocumented immigrants.
Arizona, Nevada, California, Texas and Florida have the largest illegal immigrant populations, according to Pew Hispanic Center estimates.

In these days of spiraling fuel prices, you may be considering something a little more easy on the wallet than that great big Hummer you considered buying.
Some of the nation's most super-fuel-efficient cars will be on display today and for the weekend at the Francis Scott Key Mall, an event hosted by Mr. Bartlett.
The showcase begins at 11 a.m. today with a ceremony with car manufacturers and other government officials. After that -- and you may want to watch out for them -- those officials and members of the press could take the cars for a test spin.
Guests include Alexander Karsner, assistant secretary for energy and renewable energy for the Department of Energy, and Michael Harrington, director of external affairs for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Cars that will be whizzing around are: the Ford Hybrid Escape, the GM HydroGen3 fuel cell minivan, the Honda Hybrid Civic, the Toyota Hybrid Camry or Prius and the Toyota Yaris.
