On the commute to work this morning (beautiful day here in Jax, FL by the way) I was merging onto the highway thinking about snapping a nice JOTD photo. Once I had merged, I realized the vehicle behind me (a small bus) was not tailgating me in my regular 50mph cruise. I was astonished! Then, to my even greater surprise, I realized that the oversized pickup in front of me was a) actually towing something and b) only going 50-55mph! So essentially for most of my commute I wasn't honked at or tailgated and I even got a nice draft from the guy in front of me.
Then I got to thinking. If we highlight people's bad driving decisions in Jerk of the Day (which you have to admit is not a daunting task), how much more so should we highlight those who are being responsible? I think it's more important for us to try to be positive about the roadways and encourage unity than it is to insult those who are either insecure or just plain ignorant. I'm not going to say that JOTD is a bad thing, but I think it would be great for us to balance the bad press with some good press :)
Chuck 04-10-2008, 10:33 AM Great story, twosheldons!
We should work this in somehow.
You're right - we dwell on the negative, so why not so occasional good stories?
Chuck 04-10-2008, 10:53 AM Trying to think of a title...not quite sold on Hero of the Day....Jem of the Day has the same abbreviation as Jerk of the Day...searching for suggestions.
I do like the general idea. :)
twosheldons 04-10-2008, 10:54 AM Yeah my first inclination was "Jewel of the Day" but it didn't have the ring I was looking for. I figure "Hero" was generic enough since all I really cared about was the content in the first place :D
Chuck 04-10-2008, 10:58 AM Someone will come up with something
I say break out of the JOTD acronym all together. How about something like "Sanity Sighting" since I think (IMNAP) most JOTDs are border-line sociopathic with rage control issues.
EDIT: Or you could get cute with another acronym... SoS for Semblance of Sanity. SOS as in "someone answered my call for SOS today."

Chuck 04-10-2008, 11:10 AM I'm leaning "xxxxxx" of the Day, where "xxxxxx" does not start with a J
theLimeyBrit 04-10-2008, 11:16 AM How about Driver of the Day?
Chuck 04-10-2008, 11:25 AM How about Driver of the Day?That's the best one so far.
Right Lane Cruiser 04-10-2008, 12:12 PM Role Model of the Day ?
Role Model of the Day ?
RMOD -vs- JTOD.
I like it.

Well, gem is actually spelled with a g. So why not GOTD?
mintsk8er 04-10-2008, 01:10 PM Champ of the Day?
I like Driver of the Day too
bestmapman 04-10-2008, 01:45 PM I think we're onto something here. I hadn't thought of it like that before, but Twosheldons is right, JOD everyday is highlighting the negative.
It doesn't have to be JOD everyday. Rather it is blank of the day. Where "of the day" is the event. It could be "Jerk" of the day or "Gentleman" of the day, or Queen of the day or whatever of the day.
My point is that is doesn't always have to be negative for "of the day" award.
Elixer 04-10-2008, 02:28 PM I also like driver of the day. This guy definitely deserves it too as he was actually using his pickup for what it's supposed to - to haul heavy things.
Chuck 04-10-2008, 02:36 PM In a day or two I'll post a poll with the suggestions everyone has made - so here's your chance to name it!
Skwyre7 04-10-2008, 03:32 PM Hypermiling-Enabler Of The Day (HEOTD)
twosheldons 04-10-2008, 04:06 PM Distinguished Driver of the Day :) Gotta love alliteration
2008Mazda3i 04-10-2008, 04:54 PM I had a pleasant surprise today as well. Set the cruise @ 55 in a 65 on I-20 since I was only going a mile or so normally run 55-60 on longer drives and had a mini cooper follow me for two miles @ 55 :D
Distinguished Driver of the Day :) Gotta love alliterationOhh... I change my vote.
I now back DDoD... ;)
Hi Dave:
___I added some formatting your pic. This guy/gal and your story makes me proud to be an American today! And great idea too!

twosheldons 04-10-2008, 06:42 PM Thanks, Wayne. I hadn't bothered to crop the thing :) Looks nice.
mintsk8er 04-10-2008, 06:56 PM EPA Surmounter of the Day :p
fitmpg 04-11-2008, 07:31 PM Great idea! I love it when I am able to follow one, or several vehicles which are obeying posted speed limits. Folks behind are less apt to tailgate you for some reason.
Hi All:
___I have to add my own Hero of the Day although it was 04:00 AM last Friday so a pic would not have done it justice. There is a 45 mph construction zone for almost 15 miles of the Tollway (I-94) in IL just across the WI. border. 3-lanes with 2 being local and one express. The 18-wheeler’s were doing their thing at 10 + over w/ me in the far right lane. And than (2) UPS Dualies came up on me and passed slowly. They were doing 47 mph. I will allow anyone a 2 + mph over the limit slack ;) However, they did not just keep that 47 mph pace in the construction zone but kept it up afterwards where the PSL was 55 mph! They followed the Tri-State (I-294) while I was heading into Chicago on I-94 so I did not get to see if they kept it up but for a 3-mile stretch of the 55 mph limited Interstate, 47 mph was a site to behold! Got to give UPS a hand for walking the walk so to speak.
___Good Luck
___Wayne
twosheldons 04-16-2008, 11:42 AM That is awesome! Here in Jax, FL the UPS delivery truck drivers are some of the more responsible ones out there. Hat's off to them for sure.
theLimeyBrit 04-16-2008, 11:59 AM I remember reading an article somewhere not too long ago detailing how UPS instructs their drivers to avoid left turns due to the amount of gas wasted from idling in the turn lane. I don't remember the numbers, but it was quite a significant savings.
rweatherford 04-16-2008, 11:51 PM I think the positive nature of this award is much more fitting for CleanMPG.
Jem of the Day has the same abbreviation as Jerk of the Day...
Wouldn't it be "Gem" of the day, GOTD?
lamebums 04-17-2008, 07:33 PM Hero of the day: northbound on Dixie Highway (US 25) at the Buttermilk intersection.
A guy was actually riding a bike.:flag:
