...because every jerk thinks they are...Special!

Sighted by: lamebums
Vehicle: Early 2000's VW Jetta
Place: Fort Mitchell, KY
Date: April 5, 2008, 1:30 PM

It's a shame because I know the girl across the street who owns this car. (She's even kind of cute. :D) I don't know whether it's a lack of driving skills, being afraid of popping the tires on the curb, or just plain being several times over the limit for a DUI. She's consistently well away from the curb, but today was particularly bad--plain out in the middle of the street, an accident waiting to happen. (No, there is nobody in that car at the moment.)

Got stories of your own? Send us your pictures and stories and we'll feature them on Jerk of the Day!

What about the two cars blocking the sidewalk. Those are causing more problems for pedistrians and bikes than the bad parking job.

I don't know the area, but I don't think there is a sidewalk there from the looks of it. It seems like that small patch of pavement is leading to the residence. I could be wrong.

As for the car, after all it is a Volkswagon... never know about those types... No offense to any of the careful VW owners out there. But seriuosly, so much money to fix one of those things. Also, seems like VW drivers are quite a bit more demanding that most too... I got honked at by one while carefully waiting for taffic to pass at an intersection when they only had to cross the street to get to their destination...the VW dealership... tsk tsk tsk.

Maybe she's Potential Parking? She's doing good on the potential part, not so good on the parking aspect.

lol, which would mean you are not! :D. that does become very complicated depending on where you are coming from and where you are going, and how long you would be leaving the car there for. I guess if she is PP, then her car must have stopped rolling that far away from the curb...and she doesnt want to dispense fuel trying to park closer...i dunno. just speculating.

How do you know lamebums doesn't like bumpstarting in reverse? :Banane33:

what!? and lose that precious .01 miles by putting his car in reverse? we'd sooner see wayne go out and buy a BRand NEw H2 on 30 in. rims with aftermarket spoiler AND move to alaska.

He would turn the car around while simultaneously starting it to prepare for going down the hill.

I try that...doesnt work too well since i dont usually have enough momentum to get far enough out to avoid hitting the car parked next to me. (parking lot style)

Just to clarify a bit--it doesn't matter which direction you park, so long as it's on the right side of the road (in this case). My potential parking usually consists of leaving the engine off, rolling downhill (backwards) to the next driveway down, if I'm lucky I'll roll to a stop, start rolling out, and then begin going forwards down the hill.

The current picture was taken from the inside of my father's Buick (~15 MPG the way he drives :()

bestmapman: The sidewalk on the right is two houses long. It's in front of 54, 56, and 58 only. The real sidewalk's on the left. Must have been budget cuts...

JusBringit, lightfoot, et al.: She can't be potential parking. Today she parked right where I took this picture (she lives across the street and her father owns a huge Dodge Ram 2500 which takes up their whole driveway) and she was just as far away from the curb as last time. It's been consistently far, far away from the curb. :(

I'd say she is afraid to scratch her wheels... but eventually folks like that improve their skills and start inching toward the curb with each attempt.

I'd say she doesn't give it much thought; she simply parks as she wills. This isn't crediting her with anything, much less ignorance. Rather I would say she's far too concerned with herself to worry about meager details such as parking, or parking facing the proper direction.

Yes but she's my age and has been driving for about as long as I have. You'd think after almost three years you'd begin to improve your parking... :( Sure, I parked like that a few times, but I was usually man enough to admit I screwed up, and I got back in the car and fixed it. Eventually I started parking within six inches of the curb like a normal human.

I'm going to make a group one of these days, it'll be called "You can't park for ****." or something like that. And we'll just sit around all day complaining about how other people can't park. :D

I often have problems parking my Saturn in relatively tight spots because the turning radius is terrible. But, I always fix my parking jobs if they're crappy on the first try thanks to my dad's influence. I've since become known among all my friends as being the best at parking a car! I wish they had a trophy for that...

Your trophy is when you still have both mirrors and fewer ding marks on the side of your door than the other guy. :)

In IL 12" will get you a ticket while it has to be over 18" before you can be towed IIRC.

Lincoln Park - 6" if you don't want to be towed.;)

Just to clarify a bit--it doesn't matter which direction you park, so long as it's on the right side of the road (in this case).

Can you explain that a bit more...almost everywhere I know you can't park on the wrong side of the road. I know 2 people who got ticketed for this in California. And, very surprising to them, the ticket wasn't a parking violation for facing the wrong direction; it was a moving violation since they had to be driving on the wrong side of the road to be parked that way. Only moving violation, that I know of, that can be handed out in this way, and if she already has a DUI, she probably doesn't need any more moving violations.

I think it's 18 inches in Texas.

Also of note: a friend in N California says you are required to turn the wheels in case of emergency brake failure so the car rolls into the curb....for the VW pictured - hard right, although it's distance would partially negate that.

Quiz: How far from the curve is illegally too far?

Six inches per local ordinance, although it's never enforced (as indicated by the lack of tickets on the car).

Can you explain that a bit more...almost everywhere I know you can't park on the wrong side of the road.

One side of the street has "No Parking" signs on it. The other side doesn't. It doesn't matter what direction the car's facing as long as it's on the correct side of the street.

He would turn the car around while simultaneously starting it to prepare for going down the hill.

Or FAS up a hill, reaching his spot with perfect timing requiring zero brakes. Then instead of turning the car around, when he leaves he just takes the whole hill in reverse in order to save gas by not having to turn around.

Leading up to that hill is a long downhill--I DFCO the whole way. Usually if I pick up enough speed I can roll right in with no gas burned at all (The first incline which I mention in my commute thread is a killer starting out though.)

I believe the maximum distance from the curb here is 18". There used to be a girl with a Mustang who lived across the street from me. She probably parked 24" from the curb at least 5 days a week. This went on for about 2 years before she moved out.

Last I checked, in Texas it is 18". I park with my curb side tires in the gutter, should be close enough.

"Potential parking"- Nice! Well, you know the old saying "If some one gives you lemons..."
