View Full Version : Frustration With This Trip
Chuck 05-30-2006, 09:45 AM Over a week ago, I got 80.6mpg over 207.5 miles - very happy about that. Decided to not reset the trip button and it went down to 78.0 by 400 miles, still not too bad (and still very good for me). Well, I took shorter trips over this extended weekend and expected a dip, but at 600 miles, it's down to 76.6! What makes me angry is Within the first two miles of a trip, the mpg takes a 0.2mpg hit, but at least 20 miles of good hypermiling on the freeway to recover. :( Yes, I know about getting the engine and cat warmed up, but it almost seems like the trip meter has something against me.
brick 05-30-2006, 10:47 AM Someone at GH mentioned this kind of behavior and wondered why. The response, which made sense to me, was that you can't really estimate average fuel consumption by watching the iFCD. In other words, 1 mile at 40mpg plus 1 mile at 60mpg does not equal two miles at 50mpg. (It actually equals 2 miles at 48mpg.) That bias toward the lower figure gets more extreme as the difference between FE ratings gets wider. For example, one mile at 30mpg and one mile at 80mpg averages out to two miles at 43.6mpg, whereas (30+80)/2 = 55. So, as you are now seeing, those short segments where you are burning fuel quickly take a very long time to make up. For example, that one mile at 30mpg would need roughly three miles of 80mpg driving in order to average out at 55mpg. You wouldn't be over the 70mpg mark before 12 miles into that trip.
It's all about dividing miles over gallons.
Chuck 05-30-2006, 10:56 AM While I understand in principle what is happening, but suprized at just how much impact the first 2-3 miles has.
sno779 05-30-2006, 03:30 PM At our house we call the trip meter the "MOOD" meter. If it's going up, I'm happy, if it's going down , I'm grumpy....Louis
philmcneal 05-30-2006, 04:27 PM that's why i'm kinda glad my scangauge doesn't show my average from the bat. Just focus on the instenaeous for now and read upon your score in the very end. Always give your best from start to finish!
Pff if I had that additute everytime I get behind the wheel. Well I do just there are parts of your drive that breaks that additute as well. (lots of red lights today).
Hot Georgia 05-31-2006, 05:58 PM That's a good one sno779 :D
Hi Sno79:
___I like that!
___Chuck, just remember that until she is ready to allow lean-burn, your FE will stink unless you can find an alternate to bring her up very very slowly. Take her out on the highway to 60 mph before she is ready and you may as well start pouring gas from a gasoline can out onto the highway. Not that bad given it is an Insight but you know what I mean ;)
___Have you considered using your Trip A/B and FCD as a segment, tank, and B for whatever? If you reset the FCD before turning the key on each and every trip no matter how short or long, you can use it for a target as to what you want to receive. Trip A will always be your tank and Trip B you can have a little fun with ;) The iFCD is good for instant feedback but you need a goal each and every time you turn the key. Guessing from an FCD or trip A/B with a ton of miles on them for a short segment is wasting your time as you are really guessing as to what you are receiving …
___Just a suggestion as this is how I used in my Insight’s various FCD’s?
___Good Luck
___Wayne
Chuck 06-01-2006, 09:00 AM Wayne,
This is one of the things I'm unaware of - the A/B thing. All along, it seemed like there was one trip - no "Trip B".
Just turned in the Insight for scheduled maintence. 720miles at 75.9mpg is very good for me, although I wished it could be closer to 80. When they fix the A/C, it will get harder. :D
