A marketing campaign inspires a fun new scale for rating your plane’s environmental impact. (http://www.privateairdaily.com/asset/6534.pdf)

2008 Eclipse 500 over San Francisco.

Although the Eclipse 500 VLJ does not come close to meeting any of our own standards, inside the private plane set, I hope some eyes were opened … -- Ed.

The Eclipse 500 VLJ will be the greenest man made thing aloft – judging, at least, by the promotional campaign the Albuquerque jet maker has been pushing recently. Because of its fuel efficiency, carbon emissions, noise pollution, hazmats and even the recyclability of the planes anatomy once its lifespan has come to an end, Eclipse declares is superiority over all competitors. Considering all this, one is tempted to tag “the Prius of the skies,” which gives us an idea. What better way to judge the greenness of the Eclipse against its rivals than to judge them against Toyota’s iconic hybrid, as well? Granted, according to our resulting Prius scale, flying an Eclipse is like driving seven Priuses, at the same time, through the upper atmosphere. But hey, it’s all relative, right? Seven is a lot better, after all, than the 52.4 hybrids you’d be “driving” with a Gulfstream G450… http://www.privateairdaily.com/asset/6534.pdf

Planes vs. Prius

Make – Model|Seating|Fuel Economy (mpg)|CO2 emissions (pounds/500 mile-nautical trip)|* Prius equivalent
Eclipse 500|5|6.64|1,908.6|7.35
Cessna 421|8|5.83|2,173.3|8.35
Cessna Mustang|5|4.28|2,963.6|11.45
Hawker B200|4|3.60|3,431.6|13.25
Learjet 45|10|1.61|7,836.5|30.2
Gulfstream G450|14|0.93|13,583.3|52.4
Toyota Prius|5|46|**223.3|1
* An average based on Prius’ 46 mpg, 19.564 pounds of CO2 per gallon consumed (tank to wheel)
** Toyota Prius traveling 525 ground miles.

Let us all hope these business planes are fully loaded to lessen their footprint although at their best, a Cessna 421 fully loaded with passengers, they will never come close to that of a Prius with even a single driver let alone any passengers :(

Thanks Louis for this excellent find!

If they want to reduce the polution and fuel use of jets they need to build more runways. I routinely jerk planes around to try to fit them into airports with too little concrete.
