Hi all,

I'm the proud owner of a new 2008 Prius (package #2). I live in the Thumb of Michigan, just north of Port Huron, and since I'm semi-retired the closest thing I have to a "commute" is trips to the gym and my one-day-a-week trip to my bookselling "job." Both trips are 13-15 miles on flat, paved road.

I'm a newbie when it comes to hybrid driving but have been carefully driving my previous car, a '95 Neon, at mpg's of about 32 in the winter and 38 in the summer. I'm really interested in anything that will help me get the best possible fuel economy on my new Prius and PARTICULARLY interested in finding out about any driving techniques that I need to UNlearn to get better mileage from the Prius.

Peace,
--CC--

Welcome, If you have generally flat terrain then you can get incredible fuel economy. The winters will be a bit harder, but you can block your grill and still do OK. A good place to start in the article by Wayne(xcel) on hypermiling the Prius II.

There is a lot of really good information here, so start reading and learning.

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your new Prius. Have you pumped up those tires to the maximum sidewall pressure yet?

Yep, I pumped them up to 42/40 this very morning. I've only had the Prius since Friday and I'm kinda sticking to what I've been reading in PriusChat so far. I expect to get more adventurous later. Harder tires are one of the FE boosters I used on my Neon and still use on my wife's Chrysler T&C van--those are at sidewall maximums. Thanks for the reminder, though.

Peace,

Hi --cc--:

___Welcome to CleanMPG and within a day or three, your Prius will be just like an old hat.

___Since everything in the Prius is basic hypermiling techniques, you may as well start immediately. PC has some darn good drivers but you can get lost in the noise over there pretty quick. We try and do a lot more walking the walk than talking the talk if that helps.

___Congrats on the Prius purchase. Here in the US, you cannot do much better than that!

___Good Luck

___Wayne

Welcome to the forum! Congratulations on a fine choice of vehicles. I agree with Wayne about PC, they are a good site to find out technical information on the Prius but techniques for increasing FE are a bit sparse.;)

Welcome, CC! Not much more to add to what the others have said, except to reinforce what Wayne said about PriusChat (I'm a regular there too). You'll see all types there, from those of us like Bestmapman, Diamondlarry, and me who like to push the Prius to its fuel economy limits, to those who almost seem to pride themselves on getting sub-40 MPG results. If you want info on repairs, maintenance, modifications, and accessories, PC is hard to beat once you learn whose advice is reliable. For maximizing fuel economy, CleanMPG is where it's at.

Thanks, Wayne (and Larry and Jim and everyone else!) for the welcome. I'm already seeing the differences between CleanMPG and PC. Here I'm already finding answers that I hadn't realized yet that I had questions for. You will be hearing more from me.

Peace,

Ahh yes, that's a wonderful feeling isn't it? Your new purchase is like buying a fantastic house, and then when everyone leaves discovering secret entrances to even more fantastic secret rooms that few know about.

Have a fun educational and experimental ride. We are here for all of your questions.

Congrats on the new Prius. Get an engine block heater, you'll get great use out of it up in your area. And if you need it installed.....
