I'm new to this group, but not to high mileage cars. My current daily car is a 2000 Insight that I have owned for 5 years. My wife drives a 04 WV Golf TDI that we also use as the family car. My main interest is in MPG. Years ago I read an artical about a 200 MPG carburator and that has been a day dream ever since. For now I will settle for half of that. I have come close to it several times but have not quite made it yet. Prior to the Insight I drove Micro and Mini cars such as Isetta, Messerschmitt, subaru 360, Morris Minor and Mini and the newer batch of three cylinder cars of the 80s such as Justy, Sprint, and Metro. I did pretty good with mileages in the 50s, 60s, 70s, and an 88 in the Isetta but none of them can compare to the Insight as far as over all high milage is concerned. The subaru 360 is much smaller then the Insight but has twice as many seats in it. My personal best one tank record is 97.9 MPG. That was the last tank in the Insight and I thought I might break the 100 MPG barrier on this tank but had a bad day today. I started out this morning at 101.2 and about 260 miles on the tank but got home with only 99.4. It seams like the weather, traffic, lights and everything else was against me today. I'm only a little over 300 miles on this tank so I have about 800-900 miles to get it back. Maybe this tank I'll make 100 MPG, but then I'll have to try for 105 etc. See you in the sight.....Louis

I made it. Almost a month after my first post I finally finished the tank after 1280.4 miles and averaged 102.2 MPG, both the distance and the MPG are personal bests for me....Louis
Hi Sno779:
___Congrats on the outstanding tank! It is one thing to nail a great segment but taking a tank to 100 + in an Insight is an entirely new level coming from this old hypermiler.
___What is going on around here anyway? Tim busted out a 41.x mpg tank in a non-hybrid 02 Accord today, Larry is punching out 60 something segments in a 97 Saturn SL, Laurie smashed an all time high segment of 80.x in her 05 HCH-I today and you come in with a 102.x mpg tank? Has the world gone crazy or did I miss something? I am so proud to be a part of this community and its accomplishments knowing full well others who would have not even considered this a possibility a few short years ago will soon be along to join you and the rest of the gang in pushing tanks far beyond their own wildest expectations.
___SOB, can we as a community save fuel over a given distance or what! And you have me smiling just thinking about what you are capable of on your next tank :D
___Good Luck

It's a great time of the year. Hot and dry. Most of my best tanks are this time of the year. Actually my best tanks have been in July, so maybe I can better it. My 102.2 is 6.8 better then my best for last year. the improvement came from many sources; 1. The freeway is finished and comes within 3 miles of the house. (It opened up the last week of the record tank) 2. I go to work early to avoid the morning rush hour and it gives me a tail wind both ways most days. 3. I ICE on coast a lot more. 4. I P&G a little more. 5. I drive a little slower (with $3 gas people don't complain as much). 6. I may have had a little more then my fair share of good luck.

I use the instrument flying technique of rapid and constant scan. Everything gets looked at about once per second. This is NOTa carefree and relaxed technique but it makes for happy landings and high MPGs. Keep working on those 80 MPG tanks and they will turn into 90 MPG tanks then 100 MPG. I been working on my 100 MPG tank for 30 years, it shouldn't take you that long with all the help from sights like this.
Terry Thanks
Phil
I recorded my record tank separately and combined 80some thousand miles of tanks into another entry. I have a tank by tank record of 108 tanks on the GH sight if you want to see my slow learning curve. The tanks are recorded on this sight and the GH sight under sno779 silver slipper and my wifes TDI is called lil tractor....Louis
