In Japan, they are often known as keicars (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keicar) and about half the body and engine size of the Honda Insight. The Smart is one of the most famous microcars today - the Trabant (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trabant) famous as East Germans went to the West as the Berlin Wall came down.

There are not many microcars in the US - most are probably not even legal.
