The US House voted to extend the ban on offshore drilling in effect since 1981. Texas and Lousiana are exempt.

Congressmen argued the spill risks and eyesores of a rig three miles from a beach....the other side presented an interesting counterpoint. If US energy prices are kept high, it encourages the offshoring of petrochemical jobs. :(

I have an idea - allow drilling with conditions. Pass into law that drillers will absoultely assume responsibility for any spills in this once banned region - period. Require them to find less unsightly ways to drill. For instance, drill diagonally from an area that won't spoil the beach view.

Politics probably comes before common sense, but more rationality is what we need.
