View Full Version : Hiking shoes?

Not lately as the weather sucks but I was hiking or scrambling (climbing without equipment, using hands-- rather low level stuff-- no dangerous heights) in the local Sandia mountains. So for Xmas I got myself some hiking shoes. I only carry a small pack (small first aid kit, sun screen, water, granola bar, and water for the dog, if I take her). These are pretty short trips and I'm usually out only 2-3 hours.

I hope someone knows something about this! Anyway, I got Merrell Chameleon Wraps XCR
http://www.usoutdoorstore.com/outlet/merrell-chameleon-wrap-goretex-xcr-womens.html
They have gotten very good reviews.

They are really sturdy rigid shoes. And I have to say that I have never worn much but running shoes (New Balance and Brooks) for many years. I also have orthodics for Plantar Faciatis. I wonder if I am ever going to adjust to these, but I have been trying to wear them around the house, but can't for more than an hour or so. I am thinking of taking them back for trail runners. I'd like something a little warmer than the mesh type shoe.

Any ideas on this?

I love my Merrells, but they're very broken in. Although I have some "everyday" shoes, not hiking shoes. I don't know if that makes a difference or not. As fas as keeping them versus taking them back, that's up to your feet. :p

Hi Mike,

Fellow Corolla drivers and fellow hikers (though on different paths, huh?) Do you do scrambling? :-)

Anyway, I have pretty much decided to take them in today, and see if they have some not 100% mesh uppers. I doubt if I will get used to them, I decided last night. Sometimes writing posts helps me think outloud.

Merrells have a very good reputation (and I could have happily warn their Ventilators, I think) but the Cameloens have a very stiff sole and upper that is going to be a big jump from what I usually wear.

I know this is just you, but have you worn track runners??
I am not much of a runner, but jog a little and have worn running shoes for maybe 10 years due to Plantar Faciatis.

Des,

While running shoes are quite different, a good fit is still dictated by the type of feet (see this link (http://www.runnersworld.ltd.uk/foottype.htm)). Some people need wider soles for better support (as some have told me).

Des,

I haven't actually done much hiking lately. I've been busy working on the house/yard. I have done quite a bit of hiking through Lowe's and Home Depot though. :p And with a baby on the way in about 8 weeks (), it might be another long while before I get to do anymore. There are some places nearby that I can do about a 30 minute loop on, but it's really just walking through a wooded area. Not quite the same. C'est la vie, je suppose.
