Well we have a flyball tournement up near Austin and yes we have a 01 Tahoe and use it to transport the dogs and equipment etc. We'll use the a/c but I still want to see if getting past the EPA in the boat:rolleyes: is doable.kevin

I was thinking FAS but I would freak the wife out...lol. I usually get 17 w/o a/c:( and driving like most people, but when the hills start I'll try neutral on some of them, that and 55mph.kevin

Texashchman, if you keep your speeds to less than 55 MPH and go very easy on acceleration, you just might tap into the 20s.

Remember, brake early for lights - getting started with that big boat will take a lot fuel.

Personally, I don't recommend FAS with the trailer; compromising your braking and steering capabilities may be more dangerous than its worth. Only on an off-ramp or anticipated slow down could you use your added mass and momentum to keep you rolling further while gaining valuable MPGs. Just be sensible.

___I think you will do great in it myself. It has an aFCD in it right? I have to admit that GM Auto transmissions are some of the best for both FAS’ing and high and low speed P&G’s. They are in some cases better then a manual if you can believe that! We use both a ½ Ton FWD Silverado and a ¾ Ton 4WD Silverado at work and they are just so darn smooth when pushing a short segment that I do not see you having any problems knocking out something big with that pig. Just take it rally easy on your accelerations, grab a slower speed draft when available, and generally just take it easy. Any slow downs for a rest stop is FAS territory from over ¾ of a mile away so use it if in fact you are stopping while out on the trip. I was in an absolute mind bender in downtown Chicago at rush hour (Children’s Memorial in the Lincoln park neighbor hood). Over 3.5 - 4 hours and 45 or so miles, the MDX still arrived home with a 28.x mpg segment last summer. Do not be afraid of that key because if you are stuck idling that big SOB, you tank will be shot in a heartbeat :( Then again, if you are cruising in 90 + degree temps with the family, A/C is of prime importance and about all you can do is take it easy with speed, accel’s, and decel’s running ICE-On at all time. Do not forget to DWL and DWB while running the A/C as well. A night time travel itinerary might be the best solution to reduce A/C loading if that is even remotely possible? Let us know how your trips FE turns out as a full sized Tahoe is going to be a real challenge. I do know many here would love the chance to push something of that size just to find out how good or bad they are with a known guzzler given the techniques we all employ to maximize tanks ...

No FCD on it, and night trip is not possible at least on going ther cominghome might be a different story, it just depends on when we get out. Temps will be in the 90's so a/c for my wife and dogs is a must have. DWL will be done and like I said before 55mph will be the limit..at this point.kevin

fwiw, I was able to cover 470 miles sea level-3Kft and back, with a week at the lake tooling around for coffee, minigolf, etc all on 19gal in my Explorer last July. AC, 80s, long steep grades. So my 24.5 overall was probably 30ish hwy.

hm if tires are propelry pressed in that tahoe and with the large curb weight wouldn't it be able to coast for a long awhile since the earth's friction will take a long time to stop it?

Yes going to check the tires in a little bit,always do though on all my vehicles. We don't pull a trailer but like I said before FAS would freak the wife out in the boat...lol. Will give an update probably tonight on the mileage to Austin since we do get wifi at the hotel. Sad note thou is we are going to make a stop at our land for awhile and have some country roads will do the best I can thou. As we say down here Ya'll have a GREAT weekend.kevin

I recently tried FE driving for the first time in my 99 Land Cruiser on two recent trips between Redwood City and Santa Maria, CA (480 miles roundtrip). EPA 13/16. Using DWL and some surfing my roundtrip highway segment average was 19.4mpg. Average speed was 60mph.

i still think N is the magic coaster next to FASing.

Well when we started the tank had about 11 miles on the tank which my wife had driven.
I had 179.1 miles on the tank when we came into this town that normally has gas about .10 cents cheaper than anywhere else on the drive We didn't need gas but I filled up because of the price and needed to stretch. 8.589 gal. of gas. 20.85 mpg. EPA is 19. Mainly did 55-58 mph and did some coasting when was avail. Not great but with a/c on and my first time trying to get better mpg with this hog I'm not complaining. Actually it's the best we've EVER gotten on it. Oh by the way gas in Austin was cheaper, oh well and cheaper than Houston by .30 a gal.kevin
