View Full Version : Hybridfest - July 22 2006
tbaleno 05-13-2006, 07:43 PM This thread is for people to talk about Hybridfest.
If you plan to go post here so we can find out who from cleanmpg will be there. Also, if you are looking for someone to carpool with or have any other things you want to talk about related to Hybridfest use this thread for that as well.
What is Hybridfest?
According to the website www.hybridfest.com its "A hybrid electric car show and more!"
BE a part of the nation’s largest event dedicated to hybrid electric cars.
LEARN everything you wanted to know about hybrid cars and a whole lot more!
SEE which hybrid cars and SUVs are on the market and take them for a test drive.
MEET hybrid car owners, find out why they love their hybrids!
For more information go there website at http://www.hybridfest.com
hawkgt647 05-18-2006, 09:12 AM I'm starting to think about possibly attending Hybridfest.
My wife is interested, but wants to know what other attractions are in the area. She is not into the car scene too much.
A friend from work is from that area and suggested visiting Sheboygan if we wanted to add a few days onto the trip.
After driving that far, I would want to make a mini-vacation out of it and do something after Hybridfest.
If we stayed a few extra days, can ya'll suggest a few places to visit or nice places to stay at night?
Texashchman 05-18-2006, 10:36 AM Don we'll be in Chicago in June and there's tons of stuff to do. Ball game? Second City, The Art Institute is a fantastic museum. I never went there as a kid but went back to Chicago for some meeting once and went there and never knew they had some many works from the impressionists in all my life. They had a whole room at the time of nothing but Monets Haystacks painted in different light. Also Frank lloyd Wrights "Taliesin" is located in Wisconsin and there homes outside Chicago "Oak Park" that I think you can check out.
tbaleno 05-18-2006, 11:25 AM There will be the county fair, but the Wisconsin Dells has huge water parks and other attractions. There are some casinos if your in to that sort of thing. Look up Wisconson Dells for an idea of what is around.
Hi Don and Kevin:
___If you were considering bringing the wife and kids, the Kalahari Water Park and Resort (http://www.kalahariresort.com/WI/Waterpark.aspx) up at Wisconsin Dell’s is a place I can recommend wholeheartedly. It is not as inexpensive as a std. hotel but if your wife and kids are not interested in a Hybrid related event, they have an indoor and outdoor water park that can keep even the most bored children entertained for days on end. This water park as well as many others in the area are only about 40 miles NW of Madison so its close enough to stay and enjoy the amenities but not to far as to make the drive in a chore from the resort to Hybridfest itself on Saturday morning.
___On another note, it would be both an honor and a pleasure to finally meet the two of you in person.
___Good Luck
___Wayne
Texashchman 05-18-2006, 12:49 PM Wayne, we'll not beable to make the Hybridfest as we will be up there in June to see my parents. I tried to make it for July but our big Tournament is that weekend of the Hybridfest:-(. We will be in Huntley and Crystal Lake area for the weekend of June 9-11th and then to Chicago for a game on tuesday. Would love to see how you hypermile!kevin
Hi Kevin:
___If you are going to be here on June 9 - 11, do you think you would like to go to real ball park as in Miller Park for a Brewers game on the 11th? The Madison/Milwaukee hybrid group(s) are having their annual get together that Saturday as a preview of Hybridfest to come. $9.00 for the game, a hot dog, and a drink. Makes a visit to Wrigley seem like a nightmare by comparison ;)
___Tom and I are going to be there and I am sure we can come up with a few more tickets given the event is still wide open for attendees. Either way, let us know because Tom and I could possibly meet up with you at let’s say Maggiano’s in either the Eastern or Western suburbs on another day depending on where you are staying?
___Good Luck
___Wayne
Texashchman 05-18-2006, 01:21 PM Sorry but Sat. is out of the question but meeting Sun. I could possible do.Still haven't figured out where we are staying the 9th -11 as my parents is a small place and Borthers in Crystal lake is small to so checking on a motel close by but Mon we are going to a hotel 5 blocks from Wrigley field.kevin
Hi Kevin:
___As those dates get closer, Tom and I will definitely try and lock something down so we can get together with you somewhere in the Northern burbs.
___Good Luck
___Wayne
Chuck 05-18-2006, 02:24 PM I'll consider making the trip. I've never been to Wisconsin and it's a chance to see some of you in person.

Sounds like a winner. I'll send you my phone number.kevin
tbaleno 05-18-2006, 02:58 PM If enough people come maybe we can rent a tent and have a cleanmpg hospitality tent at hybrid fest ;)
billy 05-18-2006, 03:26 PM Hi Delta; hope you will make it! It would be nice to meet you. I am driving all the way from Seattle to attend; maybe I can average 98 mpg along the way.
The next day (sunday) I will drive 2 hours to Oshkosh, and watch all the planes land. (world's largest aviation event)
tbaleno 05-18-2006, 03:31 PM Is sunday that huge air thing with like miles of planes? I may have to head up there myself.
Edit: I just checked the air show starts on the 24th which is a Monday :( I won't be able to go.
Chuck 05-18-2006, 03:39 PM Tom,
What about a public poll (i.e. your nickname will be revealed) that identifies those that definitely plan to come, and those that are probable?
Hot Georgia 06-17-2006, 09:34 PM I wish to heck that I could make it, but can not get away. :(
tigerhonaker 06-18-2006, 12:25 AM I wish to heck that I could make it, but can not get away. :(
I was wondering if you were going to be able to go to Hybridfest. I had this thought that if you were maybe we could Team up and you meet me at my home in Franklin, TN. and follow each other up to the meet.
In my case I would need to go by (Xcel's) Wayne's house because we would be going over together. But still the trip would be fun with us going up there as a Team.
It was just a thought and I did mention or should say left you a message over at Edmonds to see if you were going to Hybridfest.
Sorry you will not be going up. It would I think have been fun to travel up there together.
Terry
Hot Georgia 06-18-2006, 03:29 AM Yes, that would have been a great trip. :(
Hi Steve:
___Why not? You are only ~ 12 hours from my home (14 with the iFCD pegged at 80 :)) and by the sounds of it, I am going to have a contingent of guests at my home Thursday/Friday until we all trek up to HF in Madison either Friday night or very early Saturday morning? Let me know as I most certainly will keep the light on for ya!
___You may as well stop off at Terry’s and drive up with him in his brand new and wonderfully equipped HCH-II for that matter? The long highway drive will help bring his HCH-II’s lmpg up a bit in fact. He needs all the help he can get given his 6.1 mile daily commute ;)
___Good Luck
___Wayne
Hot Georgia 06-18-2006, 02:03 PM Believe me I'd love to go, if nothing else to meet you all. I can't get away from my primary job which is the main reason.
Earlier in the year I had chicken Pox, and last month Strep throat which used up just about all my vacation time at work. (They don't have sick leave)
I'm left with a couple of free days/hours which I must save, as they will not be reset until Jan 01 2007. This really sux but they are really most strict about it.
Actually I work at BellSouth as a multimedia internal network repair person.
We lease DSL fast internet lines to hundreds of ISP's for their resale and I work in an office maintaining those networks.
Actually it sounds more complicated than it really is but the pay is excellent and couldn't take the chance.
Wayne I missed the lunch meeting the last time you came through GA- but I know we'll meet up sometime, along with Terry and others.
Hi Steve:
___Can you take off just one day then? Maybe Friday so you and Terry could come up after work on Thursday evening? HF is over Saturday night and you can stay here afterwards again. That way you and Terry could leave bright and early on Sunday morning for the ride back to TN and GA. Home late Sunday night in fact!

Wayne/Steve;
Sent PM to Steve to see if We could work this Hybridfest thing out for the trip.
Wayne I have Very-High-Hopes for this working now for Hot Georgia and Tiger. I put some real thought behind this and I think this should Fly. ;)
Terry
BTW, Fingers Crossed Here and Toes :D
Hot Georgia 06-18-2006, 07:00 PM Wayne, I've explained to Terry in the PM that I'm on a manditory 6-day work week at least through the first two weeks of July.
Hybrid Fest is on the 22nd so may be out of this window, and might be available.
I'm going to discuss it with my wife tonight and let you all know.
We always do trips-events together and could use these nights out.
If it's not too late in the evening I'll give Terry a call when I know something.
If we can go, we'd likely stay at a nearby hotel for the privacy but thanks for all the hospitality.
I understand Terry would like to crash at your place, and if so we'd probably take Sparky (My HCH) to the Hotel.
I'd love to go and meet you all!
tbaleno 06-18-2006, 07:48 PM The clarion in madison is a great hotel. I recommend them. I'm glad hybridfest decided to reserver a block of rooms. Plus hybridfest is literaly next door and there is a covered walkway to the area.
Hot Georgia 06-19-2006, 02:45 AM Thanks Tom and everyone. I might be able to work this thing out.
Hopefully I'll know in a day or so.
hobbit 06-19-2006, 10:52 AM Hmmm, sounds like Wayne's place is packin' up pretty fast. How
far are you from Madison? Are there other crash-space opportunities
closer in, or would it be better to maybe coordinate some room-
sharing at the onsite hotel itself?
.

Hi Hobbit:
___You are most certainly welcome here although I might require you to wear shoes :D You may have to sleep on the floor with a sleeping bag but that may be more comfortable then sleeping in the car? I know we have done that before too ;) Just let me know.
___I am still not sure if we will all caravan up Friday night so as to catch the initial stages of HF 2006 (Ice cream social) or leave ultra early from my home on Saturday morning so as to not miss anything. I am ~ 2 - 2.5 hours Southeast of Madison so it is not exactly a hop skip and a jump. An 05:30 AM departure would work? I can plan on having a few of us stay together in a few room(s) up near Madison if needed as well. It would be much easier for all of us if we found a room(s) up near Madison and got together up there on Friday night. I think Terry and Cathy will be heading up there on Friday from my place and that sounds like a better plan. That is up to whoever wants a place to sleep before the event as well as Saturday night after the event. I am not sure of Dan Kroushl’s plans as he has relatives in my immediate vicinity but I believe he is heading up to Madison on Thursday as well? Either way, it would be great to have all of us join up for dinner at a favorite local restaurant of mine (Maggiano’s) so as to meet in a much more relaxed atmosphere.
___Along similar lines … When Billy, Cynthia, Gary G., his wife, some of his children, my wife and myself all met up down near Vero Beach, FL. the night before Sebring this past February, it was not only a great time, it was nice to get to know one another without the pressure of having to get to the event itself weighing on our minds. Just a very nice and relaxing dinner after a long days drive to meet old friends as well as new ones. It was more then just an enjoyable experience, it was a great one.
___To Recap. My home is open for Thursday and possibly Friday night although it would be preferable if we were up in Madison on Friday night. After the event, my home is open once again for Saturday night for those that will be heading South and/or East to get back home.
___Good Luck
___Wayne
hobbit 06-19-2006, 11:17 PM Shoes *in* the house? That doesn't make sense..
.
I tried sleeping in the Pri a couple of weekends ago, while up at
Laconia Bike Week [ironic, eh..]. It was comfy, especially
when stretched out on my cargo-board in the back, but the big
problem was that it was a generally wet weekend with a lot of
humidity in the air and basically, the moisture I emitted while
sleeping landed on the windows, including the big sloped hatch
one, and it more or less rained inside the car. Woke up totally
sweaty and gross. And I had even run the defrost [AC compressor
on to dry the air] for a while before turning in. Problem is that
the interior volume isn't really large enough to dissipate the
humidity from a human body inside. Maybe it would be better on a
drier night, dunno. Also I suppose if I was just in the seat, none
of the windows would be above me but the humidity would still build.
.
Anyways, if I do this I'd definitely want to make a long weekend
out of it, and getting into Madison sometime Friday to hook up with
people sounds like totally the right thing to do. And then there's
something going on Sunday, right? Tearing into an Insight or
something? And someone mentioned the Oshkosh air show on Monday ...
If I was going to drive that far, I'd want to stick around for
a bunch of events before hauling all the way back. Which of course
starts getting into accomodation costs if involving motels, which
is why I was floating the roomshare idea. I don't smoke,
snore, or stink; I tend to leave the TV off and bury myself in
the laptop when I'm in for the night in such places, I don't care
where other people change clothes, so I'd probably be relatively
compatible with similarly-minded folks. They put me in with two
complete unknowns at Tour de Sol and it worked out fine, and we even
had entertaining discussions.
.
I'm not working at the mo and that probably won't change by Jul 22,
so my sched would be pretty flexible around all this. But I'm
looking to do more than a one-day thing to justify it...
.

Hot Georgia 06-25-2006, 04:20 AM Ok, looks pretty much a sure thing for me to get there sometime Friday afternoon.
I'm looking forward to meeting the most advanced talented "street" drivers on the entire planet!
Surely an honor and privelege to share that weekend with you all.
This is going to be great!
tbaleno 06-25-2006, 11:21 AM Heck, if hybrid fest only turned out to be a gathering of some great people like you guys It would be worth it just for that. Everything Eric and his team are doing is just a huge bonus!
It will be fun meeting all you guys and put faces to names.
Chuck 06-25-2006, 12:05 PM Unless you have frequented a certain forum notorious for locking threads when discussion gets slightly (if at all) off-topic or redundant, you won't understand this.
Contemplating doing like Dr. Evil did to his son to "zip it" ruthlessly during one episode of Austin Powers II. This would be when the conversation "digresses" from hard-core hybrid topics, or gets repetive. :p
There is a point to my ridicule and venting about that places' over-moderation - members are people. The best forums treat people like they would at a face-to-face meeting - agitators are shown the way out, and true enthusiasts are not expected to be strictly business all the time.
hobbit 06-25-2006, 09:35 PM Like I was pointing out to priuschat the other day, if we got to
the point of thousands of hybrid owners coming hundreds of miles
to hang out for week-long events, making some place look like
http://techno-fandom.org/~hobbit/pix/lac06/shore1.jpg which
was taken at Laconia Bike Week last weekend ... then we'd really
be making progress. Hopefully Hybridfest would get close.

ericbecky 06-25-2006, 10:04 PM Wellllll...Believe me, I am as optimistic as the next guy, but I don't think we'll have quite as many hybrids as you have motorcycles in your picture! At least not this first year.:)
I agree, it would be great to see that many hybrid owners together!
Next year we'll have to extend the event. One day is not enough for all the stuff we'd like to do with our guests!
Chuck 06-25-2006, 10:37 PM I've registered, therefore have upgraded from "probable".
Just curious - anyone wanting to share a room at the Clarion Fri & Sat?
I'll make reservations by Tues evening.

Chuck,
You might want to check with "Hot Georgia (Steve) he is flying up on Friday and is looking now to set everything up ahead of time.
He works late Hrs. so if you read this Post this evening you might leave (Steve) a Post here or I suggest sending him a (PM) before he sets his plans in "Concrete".
Hope this helps.
Terry
BTW, He is from Georgia I think Atlanta area and seems to be a Very Nice Person.
ericbecky 06-26-2006, 09:04 PM Well, I've got some Hybridfest updates for everyone.
- Saturn confirmed that Hybridfest will be the very first time consumers will be able to test drive the new Saturn VUE Green Line. Two will be available after signing the appropriate waivers, etc.
- Hybridfest will have every hybrid car that is available on the market. The final hold out was the GS 450h. We just got word that Toyota is sending a 450h to have on display. Although you won't be able to test drive it (Dang) at least it will be there to "experience".
- So far people are coming from 15 different states plus Canada.
- Everyone who registers before the 12th is going to love the goodie bags. We have had some fun donations from great organizations.
- One thing you will keep hearing me repeat is that WE STILL NEED VOLUNTEERS! The day of the show, please consider taking an hour or two to help out making things run smoothly. I guarantee it will be interesting and FUN! The planners have spent literally hundreds of hours making this event a reality, but we can't be everywhere at the festival. Take a look at the volunteer description list (http://hybridfest.com/Volunteer.htm) and start thinking about how you might help. We'll ask for your commitment soon.

Chuck 06-26-2006, 10:13 PM Tenatively, I'm taking Friday and Monday off. All or part of Thursday is a possibility.
Dallas to Madison is 1,000 miles - a lot like a 15-hour trip from Dallas to the ski slopes west of Denver. Anyone know of some serious caffination for the trip? :D
I'm guessing that going around St Louis is a good idea (although I'd love to visit the arch on the way back - never have been to the Mid-West for over a half-day).
____________________________________
This may illustrate my lack of knowledge of the itenary, but maybe Friday, some of us can carpool in our hybrids and see Madison at the same time.
tigerhonaker 06-26-2006, 10:49 PM Eric,
Talk to a Hybrid Owner (Owner of the Hour): Every hour there will be one owner designated as “Owner of the Hour” who is willing to answer any questions about their hybrid. One hour commitment
Okey, Eric I am in on the above:
So here is 1-more Volunteer.

Please, Let me know you (Eric) received this E-Mail. tigerhonaker@aol.com
Note* There may be many questions to ask and respond to when (My HCH II) shows up at Hybridfest:
...........I think it will be I think the only (HCH II) like it in the U.S.A. (IMO) with this {Latest Upgrade}.
...........I guess we will see: :D
ericbecky 06-26-2006, 11:02 PM Tiger,
Thank you for coming forward to volunteer your time. The job doesn't pay much (a t-shirt, cookies and refreshments), but I'm certain you will find it very rewarding!!

I've went through St. Louis very late(midnight or later) and it was pretty decent; 55 all the way through. I think I figured that it saves about 35 miles by not going around.
Hi Chuck:
___I think Bar10dah said he recently drove through St. Louis during Rush on the way up here for a family emergency a few weeks ago. IIRC, he did not like what he ran into in the St. Louis area? He probably just wasn’t used to a “Good Ole Fashion Midwest Traffic Nightmare” is all ;)
___Let us know your detailed plans as I have to reserve a few rooms this week myself … Either way, it will be great to meet up with you!
___Larry, since you are just down in Elkhart, why not come up for the day? Just because you don’t own a hybrid yet doesn’t mean you won’t own one in < a month given the need for a new automobile ;) Practically half the members of CleanMPG will be there and you would most certainly fit in with some of the best hypermiling drivers in the country that are just now readying to appear.
___Laurie, I am really sorry that you cannot make it as it would have been a pleasure to meet up with you. You have more then a few fans around the country and I just so happen to be one of them.

For some reason-site glitch?- this post isn't showing up on the forum; I copied it from my email. Wayne, that sounds like a great idea. Thanks for the invite. I was kind of staying out of this thread because I don't have a hybrid. Keep me posted on the details. I may have a car. I am currently the winning bidder on this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4653857574 A trip up your direction would be a good excuse, er "reason" for a road trip. Plus, it would get me further along to expert status since I have apparently been robbed of that with my current car.
hobbit 06-27-2006, 12:36 PM I've been in contact with Mike Dabrowski, and we're thinking of
sort of convoying out. Timeframes need to be established, though.
And the roomsharing discussion seems to have become shelved
again -- this needs to get a bit of priority, if it's going to
happen at all, since reservations probably need to be made well
in advance. One person per room is a silly waste of resources,
especially when we've got the net and a whole forum to solve
the problem with very low overhead.

We will get you settled as well as partnered up so don’t worry about that. Just contact me by PM so we can make some kind of arrangements.

ericbecky 06-27-2006, 04:26 PM Due to the response we have added more rooms to the Hybridfest block. These can only be held for us until July 4th, after that they are going to be released to the public.
But the way things are going, Hybridfest people may be the only guests in the hotel!
Chuck 06-27-2006, 05:23 PM Right now, it looks like I can get out of work at lunchtime Thursday. Allowing for some sleep, that could put arrival around noontime Friday.
tbaleno 06-27-2006, 05:35 PM With everyone going I'm getting very excited.
Hot Georgia 06-27-2006, 05:54 PM Chuck:
Allowing for some sleep, that could put arrival around noontime Friday. :D
Be sure to bring your camera along the way and drive carefully!
I called the Clarion last Friday (I belive it was) and asked about availablilty....."Plenty of rooms" was their answer.
They have an airport shuttle which runs to/from the airport and runs from 7AM - 10PM.
I called Universal Taxi (I think it was called) and enquired how much a taxi is from airport to Clairion. about $20
I'll be booking a room and plane tickets on the 6th or 7th. Hopefully the Clairon will still have "Plenty of rooms" then as well. If not, there are other deals within the area. (Some even walking distance)
billy 06-27-2006, 06:21 PM .......I will be driving from Seattle, WA and would like to share a room at the Clarion with someone ----- non-smoking, for Friday and Saturday nights. Thanks, Bill.....
Hot Georgia 06-27-2006, 09:35 PM Billy, check with DeltaFlyer (Chuck) he was looking for a hotel roomate.
Hot Georgia 06-29-2006, 05:22 AM I'm really very exited about this, in fact have volunteered for this one:
Talk to a Hybrid Owner (Owner of the Hour): Every hour there will be one owner designated as “Owner of the Hour” who is willing to answer any questions about their hybrid.
Many things to volunteer for and I believe they need more people so check it out!
hobbit 06-29-2006, 11:48 AM Given that the public show runs 8 hours, that's a pretty limited
quantity of availble "owner of the hour" slots. Are they full
already? Does anyone want me to talk about "non-digital Prius
instrumentation" during one of them, or should I try to volunteer
in some other capacity?

ericbecky 06-29-2006, 09:58 PM I read it regularly just can't always respond :)
We have a person handling the Volunteer signup (Bradlee). Although day of show I may be helping to coordinate the troops.
Last I heard we had one or two owner of the hour positions still open.
We definitely need help directing cars in both the Car Show area and the MPG Challenge area. No cheating and giving other people bad directions! ;)
Anyway drop a line to the info@hybridfest.com and the volunteer coordinator will get things squared away for ya'.
krousdb 06-30-2006, 05:41 AM Glad that you will be there Hobbit! We may find a few minutes to discuss things, unlike the TDS.
tigerhonaker 06-30-2006, 07:00 AM Hi Eric,
Man this is beginning to get Really-Interesting. :) I lot of Chatter now, Exciting Folks: :p
I really hope from all the {Effort} that you (Eric) and the rest of your folks have put out that this Hybridfest Event goes "SUPER-SMOOTH". :D
Looking good now more and more talk and people signing up.
Terry
Two-Thumbs-Up
tigerhonaker 06-30-2006, 07:30 AM Eric,
I was not sure on this so I sent a E-Mail to John Robins about my HCH II being in the Car-Show-Area.
Maybe one has to do nothing but be there.
Just was not sure so sent E-Mail to Confirm I wanted it on Display.

Chuck 07-02-2006, 03:13 PM Eric,
One thing I look forward to at Hybridfest is to drive other hybrids. Of course most of us cherish our vehicles and will be discrimatory turning over the keys for a few miles.
If you know of some places that are low traffic, etc. that would be helpful. :)
Hi Chuck:
___You, Billy, Hobbit, and myself have a room next to Terry and his wife Cathy for Friday night if that is OK with you?
___As for coming up, give us your itinerary as Terry and his wife will be staying at my home on Thursday night and if you arrive early enough on Friday, I am sure you will want to take Terry’s HCH-II out for a spin given Tarabell’s HCH-II article. I am not sure when Hobbit is arriving yet but if he can make it up early enough on Friday, I am sure you can take his Prius II out for more then a few miles as well? I have no doubt he would love to drive your Insight as much as you would like to drive his Prius II! Just a consideration for the trip up to Madison Friday if you guys can arrive to the IL/WI. border at or about the same time? I want to take a shot at some lengthy highway miles in Hobbit’s Prius II as well as Terry’s HCH-II just to get the feel for them at highway speed. Cathy might just say, “Screw that” and take the Accord up with A/C on MAX w/ CC set at 70 mph … Ouch :(
___Anyway, get back with me about your plans. I believe Hobbit wants to stay in Madison one more night so a Saturday night stay over would work if you don’t want to start back home on Saturday afternoon. You are welcome to stay at my home on Saturday night as well.
PS: I know of a few roads around my locale so as to possibly take both the Prius II and the HCH-II beyond 100 mpg! If that is not incentive enough, heaven help you ;)
___Good Luck
___Wayne
Chuck 07-02-2006, 03:48 PM That's OK with me. :)
Hot Georgia 07-02-2006, 04:57 PM Does anyone know if the reserved blocks of rooms for hybrid fest are all in the same wing/hallway/location? Guess they would be but does anyone know for sure?
I'm going to book plane tickets and reserve at Clarion this coming Thursday night or Friday morning and would be great if we are all in the same area.

Hey Steve,
You might want to (Consider-Driving) my HCH II in the FE Contest since you are Flying into Madison. ;)
Terry
tbaleno 07-02-2006, 08:06 PM Steve, make sure to mention hybridfest. I'm pretty sure they are all on the same floor.
ericbecky 07-02-2006, 08:34 PM Eric,

Not sure how far you want to drive but there are plenty of city streets and easy access to the highway. Although you may want to do some of this on Friday evening rather than try to navigate around pedestrians on the Hybridfest Grounds on Saturday.
Also there will already be cars goining in and out for MPG Challenge runs so you wouldn't want to impede any of you fellow contestants...or would you? ;)
hobbit 07-02-2006, 10:25 PM You could be really twisted on the FE-competition rules by saying
"you can't run it in your OWN car"...
.
I'm okay with test runs in mine but I'd feel better if I'm riding
shotgun at the time, and besides, that allows me to discuss
technique and learn something. I'm sort of intrigued by the
idea of comparing to an HCH, too.
.
I don't know how we're going to begin to fit all this into one
or even two days, but I think I'm willing to stay "out west" till
y'all get tired of me and send me home! Not sure how that maps
to Mike D's plans but if we have to head back separately, so
be it...
.

Hi Hobbit:
You could be really twisted on the FE-competition rules by saying
"you can't run it in your OWN car"...
___Not only do I love that one, how about you drive three hybrids on the course “except" for the model you own? Add up the cumulative and divide by 3 ...
___Lets see, I want Billy Insight 5-speed, Terry's HCH-II, and Krousdb’s Prius II :D
___So what day do you plan on getting out here?
___Good Luck
___Wayne
krousdb 07-03-2006, 04:35 AM Hey! No last minute rule changes! I've got the Vulcan mind meld thing going on with my Prius and I doubt that a stranger Prius would submit to such drastic measures.:D
hobbit 07-03-2006, 10:56 AM My travel plans are somewhat dependent on what Mike D. is doing,
and we're still working that out. Believe me, when I've got
more info, y'all will definitely hear about it..

diamondlarry 07-03-2006, 02:41 PM It looks like I won't be going this year. My wife reminded me of a family get-together on the same day. It is in Orland, IN so it's kind of in the opposite direction. I expect good notes/reports.:p
Edit: I added my Pontiac Grand Prix to the garage. Opening mpg was 27.76. According to fueleconomy.gov, my combined EPA is 22. This is 126.2% of EPA combined. Now, if I can just hold that for another 4,600 miles for "expert." :p
Hot Georgia 07-06-2006, 06:56 PM Ok I'm committed.
Got a great combo rate on Fare and room at Clarion from Travelocity this morning.
I wonder what time it all starts on Friday- looks like I'll get there Friday around 3PM
I also wonder about when it is expected to all wind down?
I'll be there till Monday morning.
tbaleno 07-06-2006, 08:25 PM I think ice cream social will be after 6, maybe later. We will probably be up arnd 3pm to 6pm on friday. We have reservations for friday, and saturday so if we can come up with some fun stuff to do sunday I can probably be around for a while.
ericbecky 07-06-2006, 09:10 PM "Official" check-in time for Hybridfest is in the hotel at 5:00 in their hospitality area. Stop in to pick up your Hybridfest Lanyards, T-shirt and goodie bags. You can check into your room earlier, of course. I expect lots of people will be hanging around and socializing in the afternoon and evening. Probably some people taking their car up the road for a final wash, etc. The hotel has a social hour for all guests beginning at 5:30, I think?
Dinner is on your own, although I'm working on geting coupons for a nearby sports bar. FY:I Madison restaurants are smoke free.
The Hybridfest Ice Cream social is provided by Culver's Frozen custard (mmm...good stuff!). It begins at 7:30 and goes until 8:30.
Sometime shortly after the ice cream socail we will move cars from the hotel over to the Hybridfest Car grounds. You are not required to move your car, but it will save time the next morning. After your car is parked, you can take the enclosed walkway back to the hotel.
Hybridfest check-in continues until 10:00 pm.
To be continued....
Hot Georgia 07-06-2006, 09:21 PM Thank you Eric, I just registered my son and myself a moment ago.
If it all winds up and finishes sometime Sat evening that would work out perfect.
My son and I can hit the fair Sunday afternoon.
Oh! So perfect!
hobbit 07-07-2006, 09:08 PM My plans are starting to come together, with big thanks to Xcel
who's helping a lot on his end. Mike Dabrowski [Insight, MIMA,
way more frankenstein-dash than I'd ever hope for] and I are
planning to convoy our cars and waypoint somewhere near Buffalo,
probably Wednesday night. Then, on toward Chicago for Thursday
night -- Mike will probably split off and go to his already
arranged stayover, and I'll hang it up for the night at Xcel's
place. Then, Friday we all converge en masse on Madison and
maybe do some test rides and schmooze and eat ice cream and all that.
.
Xcel has also arranged for me to roomshare with him and some other
folks on the Friday night in the Clarion.
.
Nothing has been arranged for Saturday, though. Anyone willing
to split a room on Saturday night? It certainly makes sense to
stay on-site that night since I'm sure we'll all be totally
wiped after the show. And Mike will be doing a MIMA install
sometime on Sunday, and if anyone wants to implement an EV switch
in their Prius I've got kits to do that.
.
Sunday night and subsequent is still totally up in the air,
but that'll be the beginning of the long road home one way or
the other.
.
Mike already has a room that Hybridfest is buying him since he's
an official speaker. I think he's already sharing it with
whoever his copilot is going to be. I don't want to impose on
people, but if anyone's good with the idea of getting "twice
the mileage" out of the hotel, please get in touch or just continue
this thread or whatever.

Hot Georgia 07-09-2006, 12:29 AM Hi Terry
Ironically it was my work schedule which made me doubt in coming, but we're on 6 day work schedule and some 10HR days, and the extra income is what's funding our trip.
Funny how it all worked out! :)
Chuck 07-09-2006, 11:56 PM I'm considering a flyer (pardon the pun) for my car at HybridFest.
Thought it might be worth a mention in case some of you might do the same....
ericbecky 07-10-2006, 12:06 AM Sounds interesting. What kind of info would you have on it?
Hi Chuck:
___Both Billy and Bradlee display poster boards with hybrid information about their Insight’s and hybrids in general wherever they go. Would you like to see what they have on their boards? I think you can find Bradlee’s display in the Photo Gallery somewhere?

hobbit 07-10-2006, 01:03 AM I'm bringing *all* my doc, much of which gets plastered all over
the car so people can walk around it and it sort of tells its own
little story. Mods lists, engine cutaway pix, a rundown on the
blockoff-plate problem, torque/efficiency curves, etc... gotta
check my stock of handouts, and maybe spiff up the big ol' web index
before pointing more people at it.

In other words, abso-F-in-lutely.

billy 07-10-2006, 01:32 AM ....yeah, I am bringing my car show display, which includes my professionally made 3 foot tall info board. It lists all the features and benefits of the Insight, including performance specs and mpg data.
I am looking forward to the drive thru WA, ID, MT, WY, SD, MN, IA, and WI. Hopefully without headwinds I can average 96 mpg or so, and arrive Madison at about 4 pm Friday. The car will sure need some front-end cleaning from all the insects. I have a net-cover velcroed on over the radiator for protection.
It will be very nice to meet everyone!
Hot Georgia 07-10-2006, 04:11 AM I put 3 posts for this event over in the Edmunds hybrid forums. Since hybridfest.com has no forum they have no reason to remove it. (I hope)
Chuck 07-10-2006, 09:30 AM Sounds interesting. What kind of info would you have on it?
What I have in mind is a picture of the 1988 CRX HF along the Insight, a thumbnail comparision of the two (to indicate the Insight is better, see Insight vs. CRX HF (http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1114&highlight=crx) ), put a range of mpg at various speeds.
I'm bad at summary - it will be a challenge to get good info one one page. What I intend to communicate:
The CRX and Insight are very similar except for the hybrid propulsion
The Insight has substantially fewer repairs and better FE
No hybrid nightmares]It's probably a good idea to do a draft here

There's a self -serve car wash just up the frontage road about a mile from the hotel.
you'll be able to get her squeaky clean.
mrbigh 07-10-2006, 12:06 PM Hi people, I'm new to this board and I've been introduced by Ericbecky. I read this thread in it's entirety and found familiar screen names from other forums.
I'll be attending, along side my wife Sonia, to the 2006 HybridFest and allready volunteers to the event. Our tripp will begin on Thursday evening from near the Big Apple to Madison, WI.
I'm not even thinking on Hypermiling not to beat any record, I just want to get there ASAP and returning in a placid mode with great memories of the event.
Will it be posted any other activities near by with the exception of the fair in the area, for us also will be the first time visiting this part of our great country. Any ideas and recomendations are welcome:)

tbaleno 07-10-2006, 08:20 PM I would definatly recomend spending a day in chicago. You will pretty much have to pass through it on the way home (unless you drive through canada to new york ;)
Go to the top of the sears tower after dark and see the streets laid out in a grid. Being from MA it was amazing to see such order. New England is notorious for streets that just go in random directions, I suspect new york is about the same.
ericbecky 07-10-2006, 09:23 PM o.k. I'll share an inside secret of mine. I've always considered the song "Passin' Gas" written by a Prius owner up in Minnesota as the unofficial Hybridfest theme song

Hi All:
___Another hookup needed … An internet acquaintance of mine (Dennis Gaffney out of Albany, NY) will be flying into O’Hare on early Thursday afternoon so as to attend HF 2006. I will be picking him up before Cathy and Terry arrive as well as supply him with accommodations at my home on Thursday night and again Saturday night for the return. Is there anyone who can share a room with him at the Clarion or nearby for Hybridfest on Friday night? He will be without transportation so I can/will take care of those needs in and around Madison on Friday evening as well as Saturday afternoon. As it stands, Terry and Cathy will have a room of their own, Billy, Chuck, Hobbit, and myself will be in another.
___Just a call for help to fit in another hybrid enthusiast for the premier event of the century ;) If you can help, PM me here at CleanMPG or send me an E-mail to either Waynegerdes@CleanMPG.com or Waynegerdes@db3broadband.com. If you would like to contact Dennis directly, his E-Mail is as follows: dgaffney@nycap.rr.com. Thanks in advance as Dennis would most certainly appreciate it.

ericbecky 07-17-2006, 04:10 PM Are people still going to be in Madison Sunday? If so what are people's Sunday plans?
I just spoke to Mike D and confirmed that the install will NOT be happening, so that's out.
I wish some Madisonian(s) would step forward and get something going on. I can't plan anything more.
tbaleno 07-17-2006, 04:17 PM It is up in the air for me. I have reserved a room for saturday night, but I don't have specific plans for sunday. Any thing I do on Sunday I will have to pass by my wife.
Hot Georgia 07-17-2006, 05:17 PM I'll be there with my son all day Sunday. Perhaps some wrap-up converation in a coffee shop early Sunday? If nothing much is happening regarding HF we'll just enjoy the fair. We leave Monday Morning.

Hi All:
___I will be heading home after the Saturday festivities but Hobbit and Chuck will still be there.
___Dennis, Terry, and Cathy will more then likely follow me home. I spoke with Billy via cel this afternoon and he will be staying Saturday night as well. Chuck and Hobbit, can he hang with you guys on Saturday night at the Clarion? I only made the 2 room(s) reservations for Friday night so Hobbit and Chuck, make sure you guys are set. Post into this thread if you can take care of Billy on Saturday night as well. He said reads this thread daily.
___Have to bump this one … Can anyone help out Dennis with a shared room for Friday night? He will have to make a reservation very soon if not.
___Good Luck
___Wayne
krousdb 07-17-2006, 08:13 PM I will be staying Saturday night as well. The family will probably be in the pool so I will be looking around for some company I guess. First thing Sunday morning we will be leaving. For sure by 6AM.
hobbit 07-17-2006, 08:52 PM I absolutely think we should hang out and do something Sunday,
since Saturday will likely be very frantic and we'll probably
want time to follow up on lots of stuff. Maybe even take some
test rides here and there.
.
I was also thinking of offering to install the basics of a Prius
EV switch in anyone's '04+ who wants -- just the pin and the
wire, and the owner gets to wire up an actual switch as they
choose later -- point is, that I have pins that fit already
attached to longish pieces of wire to make the ECU end of it
easier. We can do some of this in lieu of MIMA installs.
.
And remember, there's that "mileage for the masses" document
we need to write! ... I want to bring that one in a reasonably
complete form to the Ipswich festival the very next weekend.
.
It's looking like I'm leaving the Boston area *tomorrow* sometime,
waypointing through Mike's to maybe help him with some last-minute
tweaks and do more planning, and then we set off Wed. morning
for our two-day odyssey.
.

Chuck 07-17-2006, 10:51 PM I reserved a room for Sat night.
So far just me and hobbit (2-bed, 2-sofa)
If interested in a room (and spliting costs) - PM me.
Hi Chuck:
___I don’t know if Bill has read your reply yet or not but he’s in with you and Hobbit for Saturday night.
___Hobbit, I am sure there are more then a few Prius II owners attending HF 2006 that would love the EV Switch (at least the wiring) pre-installed. Eric, make sure you talk with everybody about his offer in one of your less frantic conference calls.
___Good Luck
___Wayne
hobbit 07-18-2006, 02:21 AM Oh, right, I forgot another thing -- and just spammed the HF
organizers with this too: Prius people might want their inverted
blockoff-plates fixed too, which is a quick job under the car.
See http://techno-fandom.org/~hobbit/cars/starthole/
This has definitely caused at least one dead Prius to my
knowledge, and really needs to be fixed...

krousdb 07-18-2006, 06:58 PM Having lived in the Chicago area when I was younger, I always avoided travel to or through Chicago during rush hour on Fridays. So this Friday, I will be heading through Chicago anyway. The shortest route takes me from the Indiana Toll road to I-90 through Chicago, then I-94 to Rockford and finally north to Madison.
So this is probably best answered by Wayne or Tom... What can I expect for a delay due to traffic? How early do I have to get to Chicago before I run into traffic? Would I be better oiff taking I-294? Or maybe clear over to Joliet on I-80 then I-355 North? I would rather drive around a traffic jam than sit in one. Any advice would be much appreciated.
Hi Dan:
___Hit the Illinois border before 01:45 PM or after 06:00. Anything in between and you are screwed.
___I will be guiding Terry and Cathy through the same route you are considering. Since they will be arriving later on Thursday more then likely, I told them to skip the I-90 Skyway (heavy toll as it is private now) and take the free ride on I-80/94 and then up I-94 through Chicago on the Dan Ryan. Only if they are coming in after 06:00 PM on Thursday however. The Ryan is an absolute nightmare right now but the city views while traveling next to downtown is something I really enjoy every time I pass through the Southside.
___Good Luck
___Wayne
krousdb 07-18-2006, 08:07 PM I am planning on crossing the border at high noon so hopefully I will not be screwed. Should I take the skyway or 80/94? How much is the skyway toll anyway?
Hi Dan:
___I think the I-90 Skyway is something like $4.00 or $5.00 and saves you about 5 miles - 10 miles IIRC? You should be able to find it online somewhere. It is usually as congested as I-80/94 whenever I have taken it so you will be throwing the dice … and you will pay that toll to go along with it. Noon should not be too bad and I would take the Dan Ryan if it were me.
___And get ready to DWB like you have never performed in your life if you do run into heavy congestion. The only way to survive the daily Chicago nightmare is to DWB and P&G within that constraint. I am sure you will do fine but build those buffers like you have never done before as it will save your tank as well as your sanity ;)

Chuck 07-19-2006, 10:37 AM Would be more active at the boards, but got to get my flyer out.
Unfortunately it will not be in color - printer broken. :(
It will have good content.

hobbit 07-19-2006, 11:29 PM Okay, Mike and I made it to the Buffalo area tonight and the
bulk of our ride comes tomorrow ... looks like we'll be in the
after 6:00 pm Chicago slot, since there's no way we'd make it
from here to that area by 1pm! Good leg today, picked up a truck
here and there going a good speed as a windshield [at a safe
distance, not right on their butts], I turned 62.3 mpg avg by
the end of the day which ain't bad. I think we might have had
a slight tailwind since the weather cooled off, not sure.
.
See y'all tomorrow and/or Friday!

Hi Hobbit:
___Great to hear you are almost half way. 62 + “aint” half bad for long distance highway travel in a Prius II, that is for sure! Gives Dan something to shoot for on his way from Pennsylvania as well!
___The bad thing for all of us heading North out of the Chicago area on Friday afternoon/evening is we have a 5 - 10 mph headwind of sorts almost all the way up to Madison :(
___Good Luck
