I just got back from a 3.5 day trip from Lewisville (Dallas area) to Fort Collins (just north of Denver). Going there I took the shortest route: US 287 on the Texas side of the Red River into the Oklahoma panhandle, eastern Colorado (like Kansas), to Denver, then Fort Collins towards Wyoming. Returning I did something different and took I70 thru east Colorado, Kansas to the center of the state (and 48 states). Went south on I135 and I35 all the way home.
Have not unpacked and computed the figures, but from a time and fuel economy standpoint, both route are about equal unless you seriously hypermile the entire trip. If so, the strict US 287 route is the best.
I'm happy to say I did not recal at all on the 5-speed Insight - even on I70 just west of Denver on the 6% grade. Unfortunately, I "recalled" on my marathon around mile 20, know as "hitting the wall".
I have many stories, but while I get my stuff together, let me ask you a question: Who was the most notorious hypermiler (well at least someone driving under the speed limit) in Oklahoma's history? This person was "hypermiling" the northern part of I35. In more ways than one, he was NOT a Sooner.
