Filled up the 6 finally. This is the first tank after disconnecting the Scangauge. I still got over 40 mpg, but just barely. It was down almost 2 mpg from the previous tank. However, the temperatures have been cooling, so that might account for some of it.
Tomorrow I'm getting new alloy wheels installed. The specs said they were 17.x lbs. I weighed one of them on my bathroom scale and it showed 18.5. From my experience on a bicycle I know that weight on the wheels has a greater effect on efficiency than weight elsewhere on the vehicle, since the wheels spin.
My question is, do alloys usually weigh more or less than the standard equipment steel rims and hub caps on most cars?

Hmmph. Well, thanks for all the inputs.
I picked up the car this evening and weighed one of the old rims along with the hubcap. The new alloy wheels turn out to be 5 lbs lighter than the original setup, so that's cool.

Sorry, Dave. I didn't have any answers for you!
It was a "wheel good" question, though. :o

No problemo. Just getting spoiled I guess. Seems like there's so many expert eyes out there I sometimes feel like I could ask virtually any question on any topic and get an immediate and correct answer.

From what I've read 1 pound of "rotating mass" is the equivalent of 4 pounds of dead weight. So to get your wheels/car moving it will take less Horsepower/less gas. It does however slightly decrease your "mass" so it wouldn't allow you to coast as far. So if you lost 5 pounds of tires, that's about 20 pounds lighter, so that would be the difference of driving your car with a full tank, vs driving it with about 2.5 gallons from full. Every little bit makes a difference!
I wonder if you have purchased all weather tires? Having a summer performance tire (1 main chanel, and many angled chanels), will increase rolling resistance a lot more than an all weather tire that has multiple grooves that are running lengthwise.
Hope that helps?

The 6 still only has 18K miles on it, so I just swapped the original all season radials onto the new rims. It doesn't really snow enough around here to bother with snow tires, so I keep all season tires on all our cars.
