you guys are the gurus, so, i will try.
i bought my 07 yaris in ...2007 !
the epa standards for mpg were generally optimistic for most cars.
a co-worker was telling me about the new '08 epa with much more realistic numbers.
this will make your average driver a hypermiler more easily.
it seems like we've been cheated. we've seen behind the curtain. something is missing now. the challenge is gone. it is so funny, i am glad i have higher standards to strive for.
anyways, this rant is over.
thanks

I like the gov site with both the EPA and some individual results. I suspect we see both ends of the spectrum there...both the people like us who want to brag about their great results and the people who are complaining that their mileage is much lower.

Sure, now most people should be able to get EPA, but thats what it should show. There needs to be a second number that shows with 80% highway mileage how much you "could" reasonably get and the same for 80% city mileage. Based on old epa, my target was 110 to 120%, based on new epa, I'd shoot for 150% plus.

29/35 for an 08 yaris auto, who gets FE like that????

I'm not sure I could get that bad of FE if I tried... I don't recall a single segment under 35MPG since I got my scanguage

I was getting 100% of the old EPA before hypermiling (though admittedly probably was ecodriving). Yeah, I think the new figures lack challenge. I know quite a few people who aren't hypermiling at least coming to 90% of the old EPA. I like that they are still listing both.

I also think that the "real" hybrids (Prius and HCH) are going to blow those new nos. out of the water. The bright glowing gauges encourage the hypermiling activities and so on.

I couldn't get the new nos out of my Corolla if I tried. Combined for mine is 27 vs 31.
Btw, one of the aspects the new figures record is "aggressive driving". True it might be the norm, but do we have to tell people what you are doing is normal driving?? I think it is an irresponsible message.

Well I was glad to find that the '08 MMH had both old and new numbers posted. I chose to spawn the car in the mileage logs using old numbers.

For the '09s there may not be that luxury. Personally I think that an '07 skilled hypermiler == '08 expert hypermiler

If I recall
"skilled" = 100 - 120 % EPA
"expert" = 120 - 140% EPA

So I figure if you get an '08 or '09, best to shoot for the "expert" moniker.

More of us would be "expert" or even "elite" if we put in the new nos. Hmmm, there's a thought. :D

Hi All:

___For the 08’s and beyond, you need to achieve 120%, 145% and 170% of the new 08 EPA to be listed as a hypermiler, Expert Hypermiler or Elite Hypermiler respectively. For everything previous, 100%, 125% and 150% set you up for the ratings.

___Good Luck

So 100% is "skilled". That means that I was "skilled" before I started here and now I am just more skilled. :-)
