I have to drive about 200 miles each way on the Interstate next week and was wondering the best hypermiling options.

I'm running from I-294 at the WI/IL border down to I-80, over to I-57 down to Urbana. ORT and I-Pass on 294, and I-57 is a case study for highway hypnosis- straight and flatter than a pool table.

Other than running 5-7 psi overinflation in the truck tires, how can I hypermile and maintain 60-65 mph Speed of Advance (average speed).

I think a little DWL (driving w/ the load...slower up the hills and picking up the speed on the back side) ought to be a good option for a heavier vehicle. Beyond that it's all about the speed. Stick to 60-ish and you should see some pretty good numbers.

The Illinois limit for trucks is 55MPH. You shouldn't have much trouble finding trucks to block some wind for you at around 60. The flat terrain you will be working with means they should hold pretty steady speeds and make it easy for you to maintain a safe distance and so forth.

Illinois was great for distant-drafting trucks when I drove through in June (I-74 and I-39). Find one with a speed you like and maintain a safe buffer. Be sure to make eye contact with the truck's rear-view mirror for a few seconds every mile or so so he knows you're there. -RN
