View Full Version : Idiots and their pets...

Sometimes I just can't stand people. You would think that we would get it through our heads that the decision to adopt a pet can't just be reversed because it becomes inconvenient. You would think that we would understand that our dogs and cats trust us, and that it should mean something. But no. Apparently pets are disposable.

The GF has been working at the local humane society and the stories are starting to drive me batty. I can't even imagine how she deals with actually being there. They aren't a shelter, but they get calls every day from people who want help "getting rid" of their animals. Yesterday it was someone with a 1 year old yellow lab whose daughter brought home a pit bull. Naturally this dog has been misbred and probably mistreated, so it tried to attack the lab. So guess what? Somehow the pit is the new "cool" dog so the poor lab is stuck outside while they figure out how to make it go away. Fortunately the GF found a reputable rescue and they think they can find a home, so she's going to pick him up and make a six hour round trip. But now there's a 10 year old black lab whose owner has to be put in a nursing home and her kids (yes, I'm going to call the "adults" kids) can't be bothered to take her in. They would rather just put the dog down despite the fact that it's going to positively devastate this old woman. It's the same thing every day.

Sorry, but I needed to vent. People suck.

I understand what you're saying, but to me those are the good cases. At least the people care enough to find a reasonable way to 'get rid' of those animals. 'Round here they just take them to the woods and put a bullet in their head and walk away.

I'm no animal lover, but if someone is going to take on any responsibility, they should be able to fully take care of it no matter what. Priority one. A new child, pet, house, car, etc. Especially living beings.

Anytime your girlfriend gets down on the matter, just gently remind her how much good she's doing for those weary castaways. :)

It get's disgusting the stories you hear. Been involved with an organization for 13 yrs and am now burnt out. It's hard to back away from because there's so much need out there. I have gotten to the point where I have to for my mental sanity. Hope you're always there for GF when she needs to blow off steam and rant. It becomes hard to remember you can't save them all, but you can make a difference for THAT one.

Agreed, and we hear about plenty of the bad cases as well. Some stuff people do will turn your stomach.

That's what I keep telling her. She gets down because she wishes she could rescue them all herself but it's impossible. As you said, there's just so much need. One person can't be expected to save every one. But she has some success stories under her belt already, and I think that helps.

I have worked for several rescues myself - good ones and bad ones.

It's basically individuals willing to spend a lot of time, a place in the house for the pets needing a home, a store to put them out in public until a home is found.

The key word with pets is the same as here - responsibility.

Most of these rescues would gladly shut down if all cats and dogs were neutered and people took pets not on a whim, but a comittment.

Hi Tim:

___John said it so well. Without people helping as your GF does, the world would be a lot worse off. Please thank her for from all of us. My Golden is by sitting my side as I type and I would be devastated not to have her there. How people can mis-treat or care less about pets even if they are not their own is far beyond my ability to understand :ccry:

Now that Bob Barker has retired from The Price is Right, will Drew Carey continue to sign off by saying "Help control the pet population, have your pet spayed or neutered" ?

I hate pets, but I'd prefer to see more humans spayed and neutered.

Our dogs are all rescue mutts. Our Duchess (no longer with us) was part of a litter of 7, the mother rejected 5 of them, and when I say rejected, she successfully killed 2 before the other 3 were pulled out. My brother was working at a Petco when this lady brought in the 5 pups, not even realizing that 2 were dead, and asked if he could do something for them...this was when they were 3 days old. He and his girlfriend took them on, paid a good deal of money to the vet and bottle fed them for weeks. We ended up with Duchess, he kept Scarlet, and the 3rd dog was given to a very good home too. Duchess was the best... she was so smart, so sensitive, and just the best. She passed when she was about 8 yrs old from cancer that was in here liver and kidneys, wife and I were with her right up to the time of the euthenizing injection, my wife stayed but I couldn't stand being there for the actual event.

Buster is a rescue Pit Bull / Boston Terrier?? mix that was used as a bait dog at a fighting club - he was rescued in a raid. My brother had him for a couple of months, nursing him back to health and regaining some trust in humans. He's a sweet cuddly Mommy's boy, very protective of wife. He's not very sociable, although we have had him in dog training a few years ago. We've had him for I think about 6 years. We don't let him out around anybody except close family, since there was one time that a neighbor who was in the house with him loose and was fine, left and then suddenly came back into the house unannouced, and she raised her hand up, and he went for it. It was understandable why he did it... but we aren't going to let the opportunity happen again.

Betsy is a rescue Black Lab / Great Dane?? mix with a gigantic head and great drooling jowls and huge paws. She was a stray for probably a year, and was a skeletor when we got her. She will eat anything that she can grab hold of: her favorites are paper towels, cleanex, paper clips, bobby pins, ball point pens, pencils, bird seed shells, ... well you get the idea :) Her elevator does not go to the top floor, her wheelbarrow is only carrying half a load, etc.. she's not real smart, but she's very affectionate, sometimes too much. Because she is so big (and thinks she's a Yorky??) and can really hurt if she head butts you or jumps up, we have sometimes talked of giving her to another family, but as others have said, we took on the RESPONSIBILITY for her, and will see it through.

One of the hardest things we ever had to do was get Betsy acclimated into the house... we had Buster and Duchess at the time, and she was brought into the yard to get acquainted. Duchess put her in her place pretty quick, and Betsy never backtalked her. Buster was a different story, the 2 of them would go for the throat if they were anywhere near each other. It took over a month before we could let them out in the house together unleashed. It was a real test. They still have there moments, but we avoid known trouble situations like dog bones or toys. (We play with them separately, ditto with any bones.)

Agreed. People suck. I hate everyone. Sorry, no offense.

Lol. Nice. I was thinking the same. I just didn't have the guts to say it. If only... Personally, I'm rooting for the bird flu.

Mrs Khan and I have 5 cats. Long story... It's like a freaking cat rodeo.

There are good people tho. Some. Ok, a few...
Not too long ago I found a "railroad" for saving cats and dogs, by moving them:
http://www.catster.com/forums/Catster_Railroad
http://www.dogster.com/forums/Dogster_Railroad

Not a perfect solution, but it's something. Even if we can't take another pet in, we can still help, and do some good. If ever there was a good reason to use gas, eh?

Same here.

The more I read about how cats and other animals perceive power in size, height, postering, looking menacing, etc...the more I conclude people on the highways act no different. :(
