Q&A: 'Real opportunity' in alternative fuels

Participants in the 2006 USA TODAY Automaker Roundtable held a wide-ranging discussion, exploring such topics as new products, economic concerns, safety and environmental innovations and pricing strategies. Panelists for this year's roundtable, held April 11 in New York, were Mark LaNeve of General Motors, Joe Eberhardt of DaimlerChrysler, Richard Colliver of Honda and Jed Connelly of Nissan. Questioning the panel were USA TODAY automotive reporters James R. Healey, Sharon Silke Carty, Chris Woodyard and Jayne O'Donnell, and automotive editor Judith Barra Austin. Answers have been edited for space and clarity.
MARK LaNEVE is vice president of vehicle sales, service and marketing, General Motors North America. LaNeve was appointed to his current position a little more than a year ago. He had been GM North America vice president of marketing and advertising, and before that was general manager of Cadillac. LaNeve started his automotive career with GM in 1981. He left GM in 1997 for a job with Volvo, returning to GM in 2001.
JOE EBERHARDT is executive vice president of global sales and marketing, DaimlerChrysler’s Chrysler Group. Eberhardt, named to his current position in June 2003, is responsible for worldwide sales, marketing and service of Chrysler Group vehicles. He first worked for Mercedes-Benz in Germany in 1982 while a college student. He joined the company full time in 1985. Since then, he has held a variety of positions with Daimler-Benz and then DaimlerChrysler in Germany, the United Kingdom and the USA.
RICHARD COLLIVER is executive vice president, American Honda Motor. Colliver is responsible for U.S. sales by the Honda and Acura automobile divisions. He also is responsible for the Acura parts and service field operations, and he oversees Honda and Acura marketing and dealer business management. Colliver joined Honda in 1993 as senior vice president of the Honda division. He began his automotive career in 1962, working for General Motors, Chrysler and Mazda before joining Honda.
JOHN 'JED' CONNELLY is senior vice president, sales and marketing, Nissan North America. Connelly, who will retire from Nissan this summer, oversees marketing and sales functions for the automaker’s Nissan and Infiniti divisions. He is a member of the North American and U.S. management committees. Previously, he headed the North American Nissan division. Connelly joined Nissan in 1989, left for Ford Motor in 1994, then returned in 1998. He also has worked for Sterling Motorcars and Volkswagen of America.
