Good morning, afternoon, and evening, I'm John, and have finally found a forum dedicated to getting the most out of a gallon/liter of gas. :D

I'm 21, go to school in Orlando, FL, and completely enjoying maximizing the efficiency of the vehicle I have for around-town driving and traveling. However, my car is a 1999 Ford Taurus.

After my '99 Camaro lost its engine (53K miles, scorched 3 cylinders due to a piston defect and was upside-down on payments), which, by the way, was a V6 5-speed and was achieving 30+MPG regularly, the Taurus was a "I'm sorry you don't have a car now" gift from my father.

Long story short, I've managed to get 27-28 MPG consistently in the Ford with simple techniques such as low RPMs (never above 2000), coasting up to and through lights, infrequent A/C use, increased tire pressure, and the like. If I had the money, I'd have a HCHII, probably. However, unless someone wants to donate ;) that isn't happening soon.

My questions concern reviewing and suggesting new techniques to improve my MPG, and also, a quick overview and definitions of the various acryonmns ya'll use on the site (DWB, DWL, RR, P&G, etc.) There's quite a few more.

I have to say, the 60+, 70+ and beyond MPG numbers are completely amazing. Screw HP/ftlbs! MPG is slowly but surely moving into the consumer's mindset as an important number for the future. Look at how far we've come in 5 years! SUVs, once glorified, are now literally cursed, and those who own them cannot get rid of them (low resale, lack of confidence, "lack" of safety ). This site, along with another forum I moderate (www.standardshift.com) promote efficient, practical, and absolutely smart driving skills, which is something the average driver knows nothing about.

Thank you for reading, and again, howdy! :)

Hello :)

If MPG is your thing, you should also check out www.GreenHybrid.com (http://www.GreenHybrid.com), www.MetroMPG.com (http://www.MetroMPG.com), and www.GasSavers.org (http://www.GasSavers.org)

Hi! Sounds like you are about where I was when I stumbled into this forum a little over a month ago. Numbers for my Accord were in the range of 27-28mpg in town, 32-36mpg on the highway depending on how fast I was moving. Needless to say these guys have helped me along quite nicely :) No doubt the information here can help you bring those numbers up.

As for some acronyms:
Drive Without Brakes
Drive With the Load
Rolling Resistance (I asume)
Pulse & Glide
Forced Auto Stop

DWL's description isn't completely obvious as to what you use it for. Maybe it should be changed to DCL (Drive at Constant Load)?
